Hi, I prefer the imports (if we're talking about classics - not sure on others).
here's a list of stuff that you might find helpful (Comparison between my old UK Turbo 2000 wagon and current 1997 STI import):

Imports are better because:

1. Engines are better (more power / torque as standard)
2. Gearboxes are stronger (I think?) and have different ratios
3. Climate control instead of air con
4. has cup holder under centre air vents
5. Variable speed intermittent wipe on front windscreen wipers
6. Mileage tends to be a bit lower on imports for some reason (maybe because Japan is a bit small, they can't drive far else they would fall off the edge)
7. Think they are a bit lighter too?

UK Classic is better because:

1. Split folding rear seat
2. Cheaper insurance
3. Already set up for UK fuel
4. Longer 5th gear for cruising (I think, may be wrong on that)
5. Documents are not in Japanese
6. Don't have to convert speedo to mph (may have been done on some imports tho)
7. Don't have to add rear fog light (altho imports should have one fitted its usually under the bumper, which spoils the appearance IMHO)

Hope that helps

PS the above list is in no particular order - obviously the cup holder should be at the top...

Doctor Pedant here: the Japanese surface area land mass is 55% larger than that of the UK.

I stand corrected on both

The cup holder thing used to drive me nuts tho - probably was the facelift models onwards, mine was just pre-facelift I think

Comparison is quite difficult as the UK only had the turbo 2000 compared to the japanese market which had wrx,wrx RA,STI,STI RA,Type R each with their own nuances.

Play safe and get a UK version, yes they say Imports are quicker, but my UK version has a K&N panel filter, S/Steel centre and B/Box (prodrive) and run 139.8 bhp & 231 Torque, thats enough and its on UK standard fuel, not the pocket emptying stuff

If its just power your after get a WRX , If you want 'nicer' parts and power then an STI, If you want cheaper insurance get a uk 2000.

Not really as simple as that but find one you like and feel happy with it, and any of the above cup holder, aircon, elctric windows, rear wiper, electric mirrors ect ect ect.

You MUST try to get a model with a Bright switch though !!!!.
MY STI is running 320bhp and it feels naked without the Bright switch.

Imports are more prone to rust owing to the lack of underseal, I believe.

And if anyone believes that a 1993 WRX fresh import with no checkable service/mot history has a legitimate 40k miles on it, then they probably believe in Santa and the tooth fairy as well.

I love my UK turbo. Or at least I will once I've had the clutch and front brakes done.

Cant agree on the rust comment, in general terms a 12 year old fresh import is in a cleaner condition than a 12 year old uk car. This applies to the nuts and bolts / brakes / suspension ect as well as the bodywork. Yes the underseal is not as good but that can be improved for not a lot of money.

Mileage i agree with you, but many cars do come with service history, and the laws regarding servicing in japan are much stricter than our M.O.T system here.

The Japanese car owners are known to maintain their cars in good condition. Unlike the car owners in other parts of the world who use their cars often, the Japanese car owners will sparingly use their cars. The Japanese car owners will use other means of transport like scooters and motorcycles even if they own a car. On the other hand the cars in the UK will be extensively used. Hence the condition of the used Japan cars will be far better than the UK ones.

I'm sure you know that Jap cars are not undersealed because they don't use salt on Japanese roads. What I was pointing out is that once they get here they are at risk, and many imports that have been here for a while suffer from the rot very quickly. As one mechanic pointed out to me; "Christ, I've got a mate with a WRX (classic) only a couple of years older than this, and by comparison it's an absolute sh*tter - rust all over the rear wheel arches".
