Default hi all

hi, first post, ok i am looking to buy a scooby and have seen one not far from me. its a 96 (n) plate. not knowing anything about them thought it was best to ask, i am guessing its an import as the mountings for the number plates are square but the plates are oblong. its an estate i think you call them a waggon. what i need to know is it has WRX on the rear hatch, i looked up what that stands for, but what dose it mean to the car, ie more power, better interior, limited run, or did all imports have this on. if it means anything special whats a quick way for me to tell if its not just a sticker from halfrauds that has been put on just to sell the car.
thanks for any help.....tom

All import classics were called wrx, Or wrx sti. Uk cars were called turbo 2000. Imports have more power than uk cars. Saloons go from 236-276bhp depending on year. But WRX wagons were 218-236bhp as they run a smaller turbo. UK cars are between 208-215bhp standard.

hi there and welcome.

do the normal checks that you would do on any car that your about to buy. take it for a test drive dont let the power make you buy it or looks tbo. lots of SH is good. get one as near to standared as you can but these are hard to find? classics have a few common faults. rocka gaskets leeks on down pipe giving off burnt oil smell and sometimes smokes from under the bonnet. power stearing res leeks easy fix there. these faults are same for uk and import. if its an import your buying ask the seller what fuel as been put in. imports need higher octane fuel ie shel V POWER or tesco 99 ron if its an import and they say just normal petrol ide walk away! other than that if the car has had regular services and fluid changes (brakes/dif/gearbox) you should be buying a nice scoob.

hope this helps

I'd agree with Gaz, make your priority question about what fuel has been put in it. If he's been popping to the local filling station and filling it up with **** then i'd forget it. Also take note of how happy the driver is to put his boot down before he lets the engine warm up properly. If you take it for a drive see if he tells you to hold off with the beans until the engine is warm. Also have a look at how soon he turns the engine off. If it's been thrashed around the corner onto the drive and then turned off, than again, i'd walk away.

Those few this show lack of care for the car, and if the driver is not doing these simple things in order to maintain the car, then the driver probably treats it like a bag of dirt.

In my opinion as I am no expert, I would get hold of someone you know to go with you who is either a) a scooby owner or b) a mechanic.

HTH.

Bit of a basic check list for you Tom but if you follow this and what Gaz said you should be alright;
Subaru Impreza - Buying Checklist
Don't forget to check the service history fully too if it's got one (most Import's don't unless they've had UK owner's here & even then might not ), even go so far to ring the dealer's or garage where it was serviced/looked after to see what they can tell you about the car & the way it's looked after. Also don't forget to check the little thing's, like does it have a wheel brace? jack & handle? could help lower the price or atleast stop you from getting stuck on your way home when you suddenly realize you can't change a flat

hi all again, cheers for the replys and the welcome. you have given me somethings to think about, the petrol grade for one, must admit i would have just put 95ron in, seems like not the best idear. i had a quick look at the car and it seems not too bad for its year, odd bumps and scrapes, but for 90k mls not too bad. i think the main thing that is making me a bit hesitant is going from an MR2 with 37k and full toyota history to the scooby with 90k and probs no history, its just i would like a bit more poke and a bit more room to get things in (like me for a start) so i am trying to talk myself into getting it. anyway i will go back to the garage to have a proper look and maybe a drive then see how i feel about it from there.
cheers again guys for the advice......tom

if you have time on your hands and dont need to get one just yet have a good look around cos there are plenty out there! it also depends how much you have to spend. if you could stretch to 4k ish you would get your self a very nice bugeye wagon? no dowt with low miles and good history. and with it being new age and a uk model you have no worrys about fuel cos these are fine on normal 95 ron.

Best thing to do. You don't want to by the first one you see, and then have a better example come along. It took me the best fart of 4 months to find the one for me.

From what I understand this is the basic break down but I may be a little off on the years (but Im 98% sure that's all correct );

>Early classic (JDM version 1-2 Impreza) 1992-late 96
>Late classic (JDM version 3-6 Impreza??) 1997-00
>Newage = Bug eye/Round eye/Frog eye 2001-2002
Blob eye/Peanut eye? 2003-2005
Hawk eye 2006-2007
Hatchback 2008-

Hope that help's

They are only referred to 'Versions' if they are Jap imports. There is no such thing as uk version 1,2,3, etc.

I have a 'late' classic.

But WRX STi wagons came with more

V2 WRX STi wagons varied from B Series MY 94 had 250PS
V3 to V5 WRX STi wagons had 280PS
