£500 is a bargain if the lumps ok..... and as its accident damaged it must have been running ok before the smash..... AND what a wealth of parts to sell off lol..... I can see you getting rich selling the bits off....

I dont mean to ruin it for you but have you heard it running? you cant assume that its ok because it was in an accident. Iv bought them before and they have been involved in an "accident" as the engine was nackered and the owner couldnt afford to fix it very dodgy!
On an upnote it will break for over 500 with out engine buddy

subaru impreza 1994 wrx turbo wagon on eBay (end time 30-Aug-09 22:27:03 BST)
That doesn't look like an STi to me and it certainly won't have the STi ECU. £500 is a bargain if it works anything could be bent IMHO.

i see... i know it not a sti but for £500 notes there is enough to make back on bis and other little toys in it that mine have not got. as long as the engine is cool im fine as thats all i really need. theres no piston slap from cold, no smoke or nothing. i cant remember the miles but its clean underthere and looks like a "loved scoob" rather than a chaved scoob. (i know thats a contritiction as its been wrapped round a tree)
its being deliverd tomorrow and the mad 48hours im giving my self to strip it begins! (in a col-de-sac corner so some 1s bound to grass me up!!

That's the point. If you don't get involved with a degree of messing about, that engine won't be taking you anywhere. If you think you're just going to drop that into your own car and connect everything up, you're in for a bit of a shock.

If "some people" have told you that this engine is a straight swap for your old one then you have either misunderstood, they've given you incorrect info, or possibly not been aware that you've bought an engine from an earlier model year of car.

Even then I don't know enough about that vintage of engine to be certain whether there will be any mechanical incompatibilities. Your best bet is probably to click the search and see if anyone's done this conversion in the past. Edited to add: Doing a quick search myself suggests that the cams are different. If so you'd probably be looking at swapping your old '97 heads onto the "new" block. This could be a problem given both the growing length and complexity of the job, the add-in cost of new gaskets and other parts, and also depending on how your old engine has been damaged it might not be a practical way forward.
If you still have the opportunity to cancel the purchase of the scrapper that might be something worth considering. Starting with another 97/98 UK engine will give you much less of a headache.

53WRX pointed out that it was a phase 1 engine in the first reply to this thread, while I mentioned in post #9 that it wasn't the best choice if a hassle-free exchange was what you wanted. By then it seems you'd already gone ahead and bought the car, on the assumption that "an engine is a <sic> engine". Unfortunately that assumption was incorrect to begin with.
To make that engine run in your car, at very least you will have to swap the inlet manifold, ignition system, turbo, probably power steering pump, sensors, engine loom. Pretty much, as DJ says, stripping it back to a long engine and transferring the appropriate parts over from your old one.

easiest way to tell the engines apart mate. the red one should have 4 different coil packs. and yours should have a single pack bolted onto your inlet.
Its not the be all and end all, it just means having to switch blocks. Its not an extremly hard job to switch it over.
If i was you id try waiting to here the engine when its warmed up as this is when its more likely to start playing up as obvously the oil warms up and gets thinner things start to slap about and head gasket etc.
Can i ask where abouts you are?
And if you have the spare cash and time and the engine is good id buy it any way as by the time you have broke it you would have doubled your money and some.
Good luck mate![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Also i get gasket kits that iv never had a problem with yet for £54

thanks pikeywrx.... i have spoken to API who have told me how it is. pretty much said along the same lines as you. im going to go ahead with the wagon and make pennys off the bits i dont need to pay for the bits i do need!
I know theres other better options out there and easyer ways to do it, but for £500 im willing to take the risk. (as its the only option i have finacially)
thanks for all ya commets, i will keep you updated!
