Welcome
The RB5 wasnt an STI, its based upon a UK turbo (same engine/power unless its the WR version then its 250bhp with the PPP rather than 215bhp).
STI's are all JDM cars (japanese domestic market) and require 100 ron fuel or near as to run on MY99/00 cars, the MY99 will be version 5 cars (only STI's in the classic shape have versions, not wrx's or UK cars), and they can suffer a few issues (MAF sensors on all MY99/00 cars are a bit fragile and dont like induction kits etc) these failing can lead to an expensive engine rebuild (2.5k+) so its also recommended you buy a few bits for monitoring
Have a look at pistonheads, normally a good selection there

RB5 WR sport (sold unfortunately) Subaru : SUBARU IMPREZA RB5 WRSPORT No219-INCLUDING S400B
Looks like a wr edition (has different dials) Subaru : RB5 LIMITED EDITION IMPREZA (Richard Burns Model)
STI version 5 Subaru : Subaru Impreza WRX STi v5 - one owner!
There are also type R's (2 door) and RA's (4 door 30kg lighter and a little noisier)

To Tony

I bought a JDM STi V5 not long ago and am loving it. Have a look at my Garage.

Mines on nearly 100K but had a rebuild at 86K, it was imported new as a Grey Import and as every receipt etc since new, it even had the OE exhaust still fitted. All the conversion for UK were done on import by Warrender.

The only issues I have had are the induction pipe was shot and I have a very minor niggle with the fuel pump which I think I have now traced.

Beware of buying trashed and thrashed stuff and history is a bonus.

Get yourself a '99 STi (black with the spoiler removed for personal preference). More power than a UK spec car, with a stronger engine to boot.

Most of the stories about engine rebuilds on here seem to be due to extensive modding and/or very heavy right feet. Even driving an STi well within its limits can lose your licence very quickly, don't worry about that.

Have fun looking, take your time and walk away from the inevitable crocks of you-know-what that you will be offered.
