Default engine malfunction - check engine light - help!

Took my 2005 WRX out for a run after 10 days non use and noticed that engine idle revs stuck at about 2000 revs, periodically dropping to 1000 revs, then returning to 2000 revs - also the check engine light came on constantly. Needless to say, my run lasted for all of 5 mins before I was back home just in case this is something serious. Any ideas what this could be?? Car has only done 41k miles. Cheers.

sounds like the idle control valve has stuck while its been sitting. There often gunked up with carbon.etc and just need cleaning.

Hi - thanks for the advice - I'll check it out and see if that sorts it!

I also had a similar problem and it was the throttle position sensor sticking, although I do have a classic, so maybe different. Have you read the fault code??

Plucked up the courage to take off the idle control valve and cleaned it up and refitted with new gasket but hasn't solved teh problem. I havn't checked the fault codes yet. Is throttle position sensor the same thing as the idle control valve?

Any ideas welcome?

cheers, Tim.

Bought one of these OBD2 code readers and it comes up with generic code P0519 - Idle air control system performance.

Does this mean that the problem is with the the idle air control valve sensor or would this generic code include other sensors?

Anyone know where I could get an IACV without spending a fortune from Subaru!

cheers, Tim.

Got a replacement idle valve for £30 from Impreza Breakers Limited - problem sorted and engine running sweetly again - well pleased. Subaru dealer would have charged around £400 for diagnosing the problem and installing a new part!!!
