Default But will it be any quicker?

hello all.

Please take this as a serious query as it determines whether I buy a scooby or not.

I have a 1994 Jag Sov that weighs approx 1800kg and has (in 94) 220bhp and with the 'S'port botton down it still seems to me to be quick.

So. Having got me loan sorted and just waitin for the right 03 UK WRX to be sold locally when I checked its stats - 215 bhp and weight of 1800kg. I was shocked. I just assumed the WRX would be a light, nimble thing compared to my big barge lump but is it? My old Jag is quicker? Or am I missing something? (The thing is Ive never driven/sat in a Scooby before).
If this is right then to really convince myself to get a Scoobs I'll have to get it pro-drived or an STI (but with a small boot spoils..)..

All thoughts/suggestions greatly received.

J

1400 kg is closer to the truth.

Easy to get 275 bhp from them too !

It will be quicker and infinitely more fun on a twisty road. Agree with dunx that your weight for the WRX is a bit ott.

There's not much contest really between the two. The grin factor you'll get from driving the WRX will be a revelation. As per what Dunx said, for relatively little money (for the performance gained) spent on some minor tweaks, it will blow you away. I'd suggest seeing if there are any members nearby that can help out by showing what the potential of the car really is.

Other option of course, just get an STi

Many thanks for the comments. On googling various years' yer right, 1400kg more like it and, of course the fun factor will be great on its own (they've got gears for a start!) wihout considering the AWD and turbo stuff.

You say its easy to upgrade for not much money and so if I was to buy a standard 03 WRX what do I do to it? (or is there websites you could suggest?) What is the usual performance enhancing upgrades I would stick on it to get that 275 bhp out of it? Also would I need to tell the insurance? As in, es every little upgrade seen as a 'modification' for the Swintons of this world?

many thanks

J

All you need is a decent exhaust (with either a sports CAT, or partial CAT removal), replacement panel filter and an ECU remap and you should easily see 275bhp...... not essential, but also maybe worth fitting an uprated fuel pump too before a remap.

Yes - You should tell the insurance about ANY modifications!

champion. sounds good to me. just so I can budget these mods in when buying the car, how much will the exhaust, the panel filter (what is that?) and the remap cost?

To get it done properly, with new parts and fitted by a garage, you won't get much change out of £2000. This sounds like a lot to spend, but it is worth it. You can keep costs down by buying second hand exhausts (the sports cat is quite expensive) and fitting stuff yourself. There is a cheaper way of mapping, too.

Wouldn't normally recommend it, but if you can find one already done, it shouldn't cost too much more than a standard car, just make sure it has been done by a reputable garage. Ask on here to check the reputation of garages.

If you were doing it on the cheap i would say around £900

Exhaust
Decat centre
Decat Up pipe
Panel Filter (this is a replacement air filter for the standard system)
OS remap

+ fuel pump (might not be strictly necessary, but I'd add one anyway just in case)

Get signed up here: TyneTeesScoobies :: Index if not already. The club meets regularly and you'll gain some more insight from attending a meet. It's free too.

We have several very good local Subaru specialists in the region to choose from and there are always loads of second hand parts from local members on TTS, so you needn't spend a fortune to get which ever car you choose to where you want.

Personally, I would start with an STi.

Yep, go for the STi.....

(you'll still end up modding it but then instead of 275BHP, you could be looking at 320 - 330BHP with the same mods as discussed earlier )

Why not buy a JDM STi?

Higher spec and 270-300BHP Standard.

great comments everybody. I must admit, for the extra initial cash, I think an STI may be a better bet but now I just dont know...

Thanks Mikkel I'll check it out now..

Ive just added the extra mods to my motor quote via moneysupermarket and its gone from £550 upto £818 with only 4 insurers covering me! I'm 37 with 12 yrs NCB!! Is telling the Swintons abs. necessary? ;-)

cheers, J

seems a bit of a hike, good insurers will accept remap same as ppp, my insurance when I have finished my mods will go up about £50 would try A Plan who advertise on here. And yes best to declare as if the worst should happen you may be in for a fine as well as losing the chance of any repairs being completed on your car.

**** them off buddy. most people with the best quotes i know of is through A Plan or Keith Michaels. there are others that are fairlycompetitive bt you will be hard pushed to beat the 2 mentioned. Keith Michaels= speak to Gary Moulson (aka moley on here)- mods included for no extra carge. A Plan= speak to Rob (i think it is Suter but not pos.) I am sure you will be pleasantly surprised. p.s let us know how you get on bud

I'm also with A Plan insurance. You should be able to almost halve your modded quote (depending on postcode risk etc.)

I'd consider an STi, too. I'm wierd and prefer the stealth look of a WRX, so I bought one and modded it from new (the Spec-D wasn't out then). It was about £6k cheaper than an STi, so I recon it made sense, but on a MY03 it would more financial sense to buy an STi. It will be worth more when you sell, too. (Although you may never want to!)

mm im guess your talking about the blobeye, which are 225 bhp out of the box as mine was.
when i got mine i popped a rear box on h&s afterburner at the cost of about £300 notes at the time and a boost controler (dawes) that cost £5 from dawes put it on the rollers and got a nice 278 bhp with 250 of torque, which i thought wasnt to bad, now a few years down the line my car has had a little prob with the engine (my fault, dont want to get in to it) its now at api having a upgrade rebuild, just take care of it and it will take care of you.
