Default Request - Equal length headers

Looking to get a set of equal length headers soon, apart from losing the burble, is there any advantages on the equal length. Also any sound or video clips would be appreciated

Strangely enough, I was only discussing this last night with the misses. I was saying about it losing the burble a little, but she reckons that when you're not sat in the car and hear it coming, its still 100% identifiable as a scooby. I've got them on my Blob STi, can't comment on what they'll sound like with your set up, but I really like the sound of mine.

I've got Firestorm equal length headers, Firestorm decat Up pipe, Firestorm decat downpipe, Firestorm decat centre pipe and a WR Sport backbox (which will be getting replaced). Its quite quiet pottering about but when it comes on full boost it just roars, bit like a jet engine

I've been led to believe that you loose a little bit of torque lower down the rev range in favour of more top-end grunt. I can't tell though, I think the performance is great!

I'll see if I can get my mate to record me doing a drive by and I'll post it up later

I reckon go for it though

How much more do they cost than normal headers?

There's a guy selling a set of obx equal length headers which I might get. Spoke to my garage, apparently I need a slip joint if that makes any sense. Anybody can help???

make sure they are full equal length headers, a lot of people will tell you that their headers are "nearly equal length", they either are, or are not.
You can easily see by looking at the pipework, equal length are very busy.
Equal length headers will lose the burble, but in my book they sound awesome, like a litre bike on full chat.
Finally they are actually called exhaust manifold, headers is the 'merican term that sadly has become commonplace.

No experience of OBX or Perrin, although I've heard good things about Perrin stuff in general.

After Dunx comment, I've been and had a look on TSL's website TSL Exhaust Parts to see what they actually sell and have been and had a poke about underneath mine and it appears I have the 'almost' equal tubular manifold/headers, not the fully equal length headers. Oh, and they arent Firestorm as they dont actually call them that, so I'll mention that to the previous owner next time I see him

I've just spoken to TSL about the difference in performance between the 'nearly' and 'fully' (and the £500 price difference!!), and they suggested the performance gain would be fairly negligible.

They are either equal length or unequal length, the reason the sound has changed is due to fact that they are stainless (i.e. a different material) and have no heat shields.
The burble is due to the 'pulsing' and is a by-product of the unequal manifold.

Equal length sound like a big litre bike on chat.

Wiley,

PM Jimladfatboy. He's selling his equal length Hayward and Scott headers. These are the style that have the slip joint. They're in very good nick and heat wrapped. He still has them on the car so you'll be able to hear what they sound like. I know they're good as he bought them off of me They cost me about £500 brand new in a groub buy a couple of years back. I'd buy them back off of him but don't have the funds at the moment

I'll be getting a set at some point for my sti. They give a great sound, like a whailing banshee at full chat. Have the car mapped after fitting and you'll get great torque gains.

Matt.

The "semi" versions are called this as there's not as much differece in tube length as standard items so they loose some of the burble but not all. But yes something can't be "sort of" equal. They're the same length or not

Same with my wife; she could still hear the car from a few 100 metres away whilst sat indoors

1. std very un-equal - very cheap.
2. Tubular manifold un-equal length but closer than std. item.
3. Real equal length - expensive, very !

LOL

dunx

P.S. Mine came from Mark @ Lateral Performance.

So EVERY manifold ever made has exactly equal length primaries ?

I think not, you can get TOO **** about the technicalities if you must.

I have heard a lot of bad things about replacing the standard headers for stainless ones, I am no expert but for lightly modified cars you are better getting ported headers with matched up-pipe and having them wrapped. There seems to be a lot less damage to the pocket as well as you can do an exchange on your old headers.

the headers arent too expensive, if it gives me better torque and performance in general i will get a set. i will be adding a boost controller very soon, and possibly upgrading to a bigger turbo
