What do you mean smoking? if there new pipes they will as the paint and laquer burns off. Or do you mean from the exhaust exit? which again could be condensation if the pipes fitted havent been used for a while

Possibly due to the slight change in exhaust back pressure. The ring seal on the turbine could leak oil into the downpipe if the pressure differential isn't correct between the core and the exhaust side of the turbine. It's possible that the turbo was hanging on in there just fine until you removed the cat. Check your breather system, particularly the pcv valve, to make sure it's sucking when it should.

Just had this myself...had a blown turbo seal. Car is fully decatted and after a few minutes of idling it would start to throw out plumes of white smoke!
Changed the turbo and all gone!!!
