Night and day mate.
93 wrx was modded to about 270bhp and i thought that was pretty pokey,it had jap spec coilovers which meant it was lowered slightly and a lot harder (too hard for our bumpy roads) but it did grip fantastically.
My Type R (i've owned it for about a month) has a Simtek ecu and a small increase in power (276bhp to 303bhp) and it goes like a stabbed rat,i love the DCCD it is slightly gimmicky i suppose but it does work, the standard suspension is fabulous, the chassis is lot stiffer so it feels nice and solid.
Practicality wise there is very little difference imo(although you're not bothered)
I bought mine via the garage that serviced my old one and they knew the person selling it as they had dealt with it.

I've a "99 type r for about a year.
On a wet road in first & second gear you can just drive her like a rear wheel drive i.e sideways lol!
They are great fun with the close ratio box it just feels like a rally car for the road.
There are a few issues with them that can be potential engine killers but these are easy to overcome if you're aware of them.
Also to get more than roughly 330bhp out of them you're into crazy money.

I went from a 330 BHP My99 uk turbo to a 450BHP Type R, Wished I bought a Type R years ago now.
I know the power is complety different, But the Type R is so much better even in standard form.
You get better:
Gearbox
Brakes = front (No ABS) and rear(Two pots)
Suspension
Styling
Intercooler Water spray

As for engine killers, maf sensors, bad fuel etc etc etc (remembering that the later v5/6 or MY99/00 STI's are mapped for 100 ron fuel), but a good remap should sort that last one out

looks like i'll be doing fair bit of homework on different specs then
got no real complaints with my uk turbo seem pretty much bullet proof but having been a scoob owner for near on a year i'm fancying more power better handling looks and style and bit more of a more thrilling driving experience not to say the uk dull far from it as i've done a few little bits to it.....anyone got a rough idea on different specs on differing versions i know they got dccd and a quicker steering rack

Quick rack was standard on the version 6 (MY00) cars, was standard on the V-Ltd's but only the fast rack on the v3-5 "normal" type R's.
WRX type R, MY99 (no version as its not an STI) and MY00 cars I believe

They are a real drivers car.
Engine issues as Tony has pointed out are very fragile maf sensors (especially 99 & 00 models) and you need to get them mapped for U.K fuel otherwise you're looking at a bottom end rebuild.
