Your handbook gives you all the answers but fully synthetic it recommends a 5w30 oil (shell not crappy castrol), or semi synth will be a 10w40 oil (shell helix), but its the best source of info as the rest is all conflicting

Motul 300V there are a few to choose from here but do you mean the 15w50?
Redline 10W50 yup thats ok
Silkolene Pro S 10W50 same with this one
A 5w30 (fully synth) is recommended by the manufacturer on new age cars (not classics), even a 5w40 fully synth, this list goes on, you can also go for millers 10w40, motul 10w40 etc etc etc, forget 60 weight oils, they are too thick at temp

Tony,
Subaru UK last year put out a bulletin to all UK official Subaru dealers that newage turbo'd cars should be filled with 10W40 semi-synth as replacement for 5W30 semi-synth. Talk to your local official dealership.
Subaru independent specialists such as Roger Clark Motorsport and Zen Performance recommend 10W50/10W60 fully synth for modified Subaru's. Even mildly modified Subaru's are hard on oil so oils need to be of the highest quality and spec to perform well under sustained hard use. Let's face it none of us are easy on our cars and drive them very hard at times.
Why would these guys recommend this oil if it was the wrong choice?
I'm much happier taking the advice of specialists that build and race highly modified Subaru's and have had the experience of hundreds and thousands of hours testing all manner of oils and fuels than that of a dealership whose hands are tied and have to abide by Subaru UK dictact.

As to who I trust, well most people don't run a 500+ bhp engine so I stick to the people who actually designed and tested this engine better than any speciallist, and that is subaru

5w30 is a fully synth oil, they don't do any semi synth in this range, but personally I wouldn't run it, so I run a 10w40 fully synth

It's very common now for scoobies to be running 350 to +400bhp. That's not far off 500bhp (a turbo, injectors and remap away).

Shell helix 5w30 is a fully synthetic oil, as recommended by subaru on new age cars, if you don't specify a fully synth oil then they put 10w40 in as standard and since I've been using subaru dealers since 2000 (both with classic and new age cars ) the only real change is with the fully synth 5w30 oil that wasn't recommended to use on the classics (but the fully synth 5w30 is recommended on the newage cars )
Hope that's clearer
