Can I get a legal short front number plate??
Hi guys,
Have read a bunch of threads on here, but still none the wiser...
I want to buy a private plate - example X5 XXX... so it's 5 numbers as letters instead of the normal 7...
I'd like a legal plate (i.e font size and spacing), but shortened (by the supplier) to suit the reduced amount of letters and numbers... I believe you need a b.s number and the suppliers name and postcode on it...??
So, what I really would like to know is... is it legal, and who's the best person to get the plates from...
Hope this has made sense,
Cheers,
Ian

i doubt you will find a supplier that would supply them and tell you they were legal> there is a minimum size regardless of the amount of letters/numbers used.
yep number plates made are now required to have a bs number and the postcode of the supplier this is why i dont think many if any at all will alter them coz they can be traced
ofcourse there available but not legal for road use

What you are asking makes perfect sense - I seem to remember you asking a similar question before (sorry if it wasn't you).
AFAIK the plate can be any size as long as the font & spacing is correct along with it having the required BS no. and supplier's postcode on the bottom of the plate. I was in exactly the same position as you a couple of months back - I have a 5 digit plate but wanted the front plate a bit smaller but couldn't find anybody that could do it locally and didn't want to send my V5 document off to those retailers online that could do it.
I settled for having a plate at the size I wanted with the correct font & spacing as well as having the BS no. in the bottom left hand corner. The only thing it doesn't have is the supplier's postcode on it as it's technically a 'showplate'.I don't have any fancy badges or anything on it either - looks totally standard apart from the smaller size from a distance.
It also passed it's MOT recently with this plate on. Honestly, don't worry so much about it. The worst that will happen is you'll have to get another front plate made up. The amount of feckwits that get away with re-arranging plates so made some obscure word/name suggest that plod near me couldn't give a **** anyway.

Take your front number plate and cut it down to a smaller size. As long as it has the legal border size around the letters/numbers it is legal.
I wasn't sure what group 1 or group 2 meant so I cut mine down to a 13mm border to stay legal. Mine is a square number plate and I moved it over a fog-light cover when I fitted my FMIC.

Std plates have the BS number tucked away in one corner.
When you cut a legal sized plate, the BS part gets removed and you are "illegal", despite every other detail conforming to the Regs.
