I am sure this has been asked 1000 times and will be asked again...but here goes.

Which is a good dump valve?

I am tempted with a bailey which is coming in at around the £100 mark but for a little more well nearly double depending on the model I can get a turbosmart.

I dont want anything too daft as the car is used for a daily 60mile commute to work. Plus this is my first mod so don't want to blow all my money in one go likewise dont want to have to spend it again in 6months time.

It is just as a keep the turbo happy when I take it out of a weekend if its a adjustable one does than mean I can change the loudness of it?

oh my car is a 2l wrx 52 plate

Your car already has a recirculating valve. If you remove that recirculated air, this can cause the car to become jerky on/off throttle.

Your better off saving your money and not buying a dump valve which gives no benefit at all.

If you must buy one, get a HKS SSQV. IMO its the most shiney and one of the most expensive. Anything else and your not trying hard enough.

Been there, done that. Your car doesn't need a different dump valve. The re-circulating one that you have (which is why you have no vmmmtshhhhhh) is perfect. Every vent-to-atmosphere dumpvalve that I have ever fitted made the car a pain in the backside to drive smoothly and I actually felt that it increased the spool up time.

Save your money and get a whiteline anti-roll bar for the rear.

I had a forge one 3 or so years ago on a blobeye WRX found build quality, price good was nice and quiet under 3000 revs louder after

Then I put a Turbosmart one (top of range one adjustable etc) on my current STI which could vent to air or act as re-circ type when fitted it I felt car did not run as smoothly and after advice sold it and put the money towards more useful mods (Blitz exhaust)

In short mate unless you really really want one save your cash as the standard one is very good

as above, i had a bailey fitted to my old classic wrx and had a few problems with it, flat spots, jerky set offs,poor fuel consumption, refitted the standard one and all was good...but if you are to go out and buy one after all then go for the upper market ones like HKS, Turbosmart,GFB, Forge... bailey tend to be the cheaper end.

As everybody has said spend your money elsewhere. I have a Classic STI fitted with a Apexi ind kit and a metal resonator delete pipe and it sounds like it's got a dump valve, but without the flat and jerky throttle response I had with a Bailey dump valve!!

Put the money towards some beneficial mods instead

Had a Forge, Baileys, HKS & now Blitz which never caused any problems other than when the boost of the car was upped to 1.3 as the Baileys became stuck open & now i'm @ 1.45bar I just wanna try out my oe recirc valve. Are they only good or will i suffer as i have done with the baileys? Oh yea, stay well away from Baileys as they are absolute crap & probably couldn't resale if i tried.

Ok then seems like a no to a valve, interestingly one of the previous owners had one fitted (got the invoice) but now it has the standard back on.

So what upgrade should I do.....it already has a PPP fitted.

Guess it might be some gauges as its got none?
Pipercross filters?
Or maybe some ICE as its fast enough for me (for now)

Hi, dont take this personally but it sounds like your after the "boys with toys" gizmo sytle appearance/sound on your car.... Look for the performance if i was you....

On another downer to the DV or BOV.... I took mine off that i was sold with the car as it started to lead to a smell of fuel, this was due to it sticking open we think, I have since cleaned it but its no way going back on the car, infact I'll be selling it to some scooby novice via eBay no doubt. Me then!! and yes I am a scooby novice although with the help of this forum and a good friend I will make the right choices along the way.

Yes boys toys and gadgets are for me...its not really a performance blistering speed car I am after although improvements could be made along the way....as it is technically my wife's car

Think I will leave the dump valve for now and opt for more practical long term investments, cam belt change, silicon coolant pipes, rear view camera.

My factory original dump valve makes a slight woooshing noise when I shift gears. Can definitely be heard in the car, maybe even outside too. Is this normal?

Im not the best person to answer this, but are you sure its coming from the re-circ, and what spec are you running so people can answer your question a little easier?

I think the factory re-Circ and waste gate do make a slight noise, but generally only heard with standard induction and exhaust as they are very quiet.....

If one of the turbo t-pieces has come off this will in fact make a woosh noise, but usually in time with the turbo spool not post boost like BOV's.

Put someones head under the bonnet and hit boost whilst stationary

There is nothing wrong with the factory dump valve and unless it is mal performing because of some fault specific with the dump valve why not stay with that.
An aftermarket dump valve will not improve your performance, contrary to advertiser claims. It does not add power and it does not add accelleration. These are dishonest or misleading claims and you should note the companies that make these claims and engage in this tactic to effect sales. These are sold on the back of glossy advertising and false claims.
I am sure there are far better things to spend your money on than a dump valve unless you are prepared to shell out a lot of money for the sounds you can get which tend to scare OAPs at the busstop but if that is your thing you can get much the same effect with a Black and Decker drill and a few holes in your downpipe which is a cheaper option.

I am dump valveless (apart from factory type), so when i go to events such as NBO or Rally GB, why has everybody else got after market BOV's and are banging and spitting all over the place, and i am the odd one out.
Surely all the dump valve doubters must be a minority.

But the thread link below is a back to back comparison that I did this time last year...since removing my VTA dump valve I have never looked back...These are obviously my own findings/views and the decision to keep the OEM Re-Circ is my personal choice but I did try and keep the review from being one sided.

So your saying that you all re-install your dump valves for the show/events season, otherwise how do you explain me with my factory fit being the odd one out at these events. and i have been to quite a few in four years of Impreza ownership.

Just bought a Forge re-circ valve for my impreza(been on here since 04, so should know better) Only reason I changed from the standard re-circ is that I have a newage TMIC on a classic and the newage re-circ(which is a lot bigger then the classic) was fouling against my idle valve just under where the standard re-circ sit, so I had to invest in a aftermarket one, which is slightly smaller and will miss the idle valve!!!!!(honest)

any problems with the recirc valve as i was looking into these?? also as I have a bailey dump valve on there which was put on before I bought the car, is there a way of cleaning it and refreshing it as looks like its seen better days and doesnt seem to make much noise?? any help please guys for a gal not knowing much about these xxxx

Cant comment on the Forge re-circ on my scooby as yet as Ive just bought it and should be arriving today in the post!!!! But I had a Baileys dump valve on my Focus RS and the bloody thing used to stick most the time, and it was only about 6 months old, in the end I replaced it with a Forge one.

What scoob you got??? Ive got a newage(from a 04) and a classic(sti version 6) standard re-circ if your intrested, would stop the sticking!!!!!

Sticking on any DV aint good!

I had a forge on my Leon Cupra which behaved impeccably. At the mo I have the standard DV fitted, a Bailey DV12 in the garage which I will fit (when the weather permits) trial and give honest results from a weeks test, and a Turbosmart Veeport on its way from the Stateswhich I will give the same trial.

If you look in December 2009 Redline (not a magazine I would normally see) there is a section, "Top 16 Tuning Myths" Waste Gates Make a Chattering Noise and You Must Fit a Dump Valve. Page57. Worth a look.
Also see Shorter Boost Pipes Give Less Lag.

They also did an HID H4 headlight test. This was done on dipped beam only. Most people want best vision on full beam where the HID suffers from scatter and reduced penetration/range over alternative solutions.
I guess a good dipped over a poorer long range full beam is an option if you only drive in lit urban areas.
