Should i buy a cat c write off?
Hi all,
I just did a reg check on a 2003 wrx turbo that i am viewing tomorrow.
Turns out it was a cat c write off.I called the seller and told him i had checked it and he said it was damage to the rear quarter that wrote it off but that it had a v.i.c certificate to say it was ok to go back on the road and there is no visible damage now.
The car is advertised for 4010 pounds on autotrader so it is cheap for an 03.
Should i buy it or not even bother going to view?

dont bother with cat c's mate, did it on one of my cars which was a fiesta zetec s, 2 years old with 6000 on the clock for only 1k. had front end damage, seemed ok until i took the lot apart and been spot welded every 4 inches with gaps in the wing, it was never put on a jig, i would wait for an honest car even if it a couple of £k more.

All you need is some common sense about you. If you can see bits hanging off, don't bother.
True, a cat c's value will never be entertained against part ex/trade in etc, and you'll never get decent money for it. But ask yourself, do you want to buy a cheap car that you will keep for a good few years until its not worth much anyway? Or are you one of those people that have cars for less than a year? If you are the latter, don't bother, you'll have trouble re-selling and won't get much for it.
But if you want a cheap motor, bid him down and have the car checked over properly. The VIC test is mandatory on cat c cars anyway, so its not like he went out of his way to have it done.

By law your suppose to declare a cat c/d car to any potential buyer, now ask yourself this, if they knew (and they did) then why didn't they declare it? And if so would you now want to buy that car off them? I know I wouldn't, honesty gets you more places than dishonesty!

Did the seller not tell you that! What's he got to hide?! I'd not bother with it just cos seller has been dishonest. I'd never touch a Cat whatever anyway so if you do buy then you're limiting your future sales audience as well ...
Cat C is generally pretty bad damage isn't it
TX.

I'd be fine buying a Cat C car if I knew what the damage was, had checked that it had been repaired properly and the price was at least 30% less than the same car non Cat C. However, the fact that it was advertised with no mention of it being damaged and you discovered it with a hpi check would make me steer well clear. It stinks of dodgy trader.

well he is a private seller.he only told me after i told him if you get me.just said it was rear quarter damage and repared but i didnt go look at it anyway.I called another one that said it had previous damage to bootlid that had been repaired and again he only said it was a cat c write off because i asked.Every single blue or black wrx bugeye on autotrader has been sold

If you must buy the cat C then i would put a punt in well inder the asking price, say 3K.
Ask yourself - how much damage did the car have to write it off, asuming it is 5ks worth as a straight undamaged car i am guessing 2.5-3k's worth of damage/repairs - to the rear quarter - that's a lot of money for a rear quarter repair on a scoob - IMHO

well, irrelevant now i guess but theres nothing wrong in buying a cat C/D Car but as said above,if the car undamaged is worth £5k id pay £2k for a CAT C and £2.5 for a Cat D
but if the prices of the CAT cars are close to undamaged then no,dont buy a Cat car
