P1, Worth the money???
i love the P1 impreza, and iv now come to the point where i can afford to buy one. i have seen a pristine example for sale, totally standard, 1 owner 46k and fssh, and standard with the big brake conversion, cost £10500. i have owned 2 classic imprezas, a modified uk turbo and a v3 sti. bearing in mind i could buy a mint low mileage uk turbo for say £4000-£4500, or a type r for say £6-£7k, is a mint P1 really worth the extra premium over these cars? sure they are exclusive, and look great, but power wise etc they are the same as an sti. so should i pay the extra money to own a piece of motoring history? on a seperate note would the first port of call be a trip to andy forrest to have the car ecutek'd for safety given the high number of P1's that seem to go BANG!!!

Hi i think i would go for a stitype r version 5 low milage cheaper and also a future classic but how long do we own them until we want a change .The p1 is a nice car but as you say they go bang weak oil pumps

P1 - 2 Doors less than it should have and you cannot tow anything with them - buy a nice mint Classic for half the price.
So, yes, they are overpriced - always were, in all honesty. ....... the world has moved on, the Impreza is not the king it once was, and the P1 is not the dream version IMO.

Am I right in saying the P1 gearing is different to Type R gearing?
Isn't type R gearing the same as an RA (or STI RA).
I had an RA and found the gearing tiresome on long journies - although I know UK owners are happy to take STI RA over the the 'ring etc I found it a PITA and not something I could say, cruise around the forest dean in with the family - for instance
I understood P1 gearing to be more suited to UK roads.
As for price, I would rather pay 7K for a 50-100K miler thats been looked after because I'd be using it pretty much daily so buying a very low minter would be a shame.
Mind you, somedays I think my next one can only be 2 door and other days I fancy a wagon because its quick and I can still get mine and the nippers bike in the boot.

As for P1s going bang, I guess most regulars know why these days so ones that haven't at least been mapped for UK fuel and around the 80K mark should probably be avoided. Unless you buy it on day 1 and get it mapped on day 2 and cross your fingers.

sorry but will have to say type-r(as i own one)
and then when your parked next to a p1,pop your head out and say..
whats it like to buy a copy of this, winds them up every time.
think of the tuning you could get from the money saved...
longer 5th gear and big bhp..

The P1 was never properly mapped for UK fuel, there were some broquetes (sp) put into the fuel tank apart from that it was basically an JDM map,
And they are still a superb piece of kit, never driven a type R & would love to compare
We own a tweaked P1 & an 08STI, don't get me wrong the 08 is the better to live with day to day car, but the P1 is more of a drivers car & a lot more fun
Put it this way, last year we drove to Corsia via switzerland & this year to Finland for the WRC, the 08 stayed home, the P1 came on the trips

Good call
Re: P1. I don't know if it was ever confirmed that they put the broquet fuel pellets in the tanks of P1s because if you go back to 99 00 on SNet there are many saying the claims of increased RON were never proven. The poor mapping by Prodrive or the pellets are generally regarded as a major factor for P1 engine failure.

Other factors to take into consideration:
How many owners would have bothered filling up with high ron fuel back in 1991, not as many as today I would suggest.
How many went on high speed runs?
Bad servicing and incorrect oil change procedure could be a factor.
Faulty oil pumps.
Dodgy mods, dump valves and other MAF killing items.
The list goes on.

I've owned a WRX classic, STI V7 and a P1 and the P1 is by far and away the best car I have ever owned....
the p1 is amazingly setup for UK roads, the gearing is good and the car goes like a train.
It is no more likely to blow up than an STI V5/6 in the same state of tune, same engine etc etc
10K is massively over priced and garages are still trying to rob people that think they are buying a massivly wanted super rare car..... Fact of the matter is you can pick them up privately with sensible miles for 7K and that will normally have had a rebuild etc
They are cracking cars and would own another one in a flash if I didn't have kids.... I will stay with my STI7

Strange comment?
Maybe you could point to the post that you consider trolling?
Could be it's time that you moved on and accepted that, maybe, oddly, I (and many others) have different views to yours? It doesn't make them Trolls?

The map was basically the Version 5 map with some added knock correction, it wasnt mapped specifically for UK fuel, rather it was mapped for 100 ron Jap fuel, and as stated, they added broquets for enhancing the octane levels (they supposedly last for about 100k miles, most of the cars you see are around this now but half have already had engine rebuilds).
Even though the version 5/6 cars were JDM, most people had them remapped/changed ecu's back in the day so they didnt suffer the same engine problems as many of the P1's

10k for a genuine supercar is well worth it imho, name any other supercar at that price that gives that much fun.

Maybe you own a P1 and think it's still the valuable asset it once was? Maybe you actually own the P1 in question? I don't know which of those it is?
But, I stand by my OPINION that £10,000 for a P1 is quite an amazingly high price. Someone may pay that - doesn't bother me one way or another - but, and this is very important for you to understand, the OP was asking for opinions on whether the readers thought that the P1 was 'worth the money' - I answered honestly. If you think that trolling then report me
