Default Exedy clutch vibration when off gas in 4th/5th gear?

Recently had Exedy Pink Racing clutch kit installed. Clutch works fine & has been since installation, though in reverse it can occasionaly burn a bit. The flywheel was near perfect & not skimmed.

My main concern is that in 4th & 5th gear when you come off the gas & let it coast in gear it makes a rubbing/vibrating sound, almost as if the flywheel or clutch is not spinning freely. When this happens the car very slightly slows down due to this resistance & the noise/vinration can be heard quite easily.

Is this normal for the Exedy clutch or if not:

-Has the clutch plate been tightened correctly?

-On Classics there is a spring (underneath the intercooler) that goes from the clutch slave cylinder to the clutch arm & helps pull the clutch back when clutch is released. Does a Hawkeye have this & if so could this spring have been left out & hence clutch is not fully releasing?

- or is it something else?

My Hyper single is atrocious... I can't use <2000 rpm in 5th or 6th any longer as it sounds and "feels" horrible.

IMHO

Mine judders real bad....................

Flywheel was skimmed too?

I wouldnt buy another.

I think its a material issue, It seems to glaze with normal use.

If you abuse it comes good, but only for a short time!

Thanks for all your replies
I have also read on the Type RA forum that a similar thing happened to a couple of members & it seems it was a inherent trait of the Exedy Racing Clutch

I will still check the spring to make sure its still there, further than that I dont know what else to do?

Dunx, the problem sounds exactly as you described.

Dan do not go near Competiton Clutch, apart from their rubbish clutches their customer service is unbelievably bad, they are a bunch of crooks who should not be in business. I have handed over the problem to my credit card company who have recovered my money & trading standards are also involved. But I will update that thread after a few issues have been finalised in a couple of weeks.

I was told mine is "clutch-trash" which COULD be related to a slight mis-alignment (?)

Apart from not being able to use 6th gear below 40 mph it's just a mild annoyance. Certainly hasn't slipped.

Ive think ive got the same thing but in 3rd & 4th

Ive been told that its common on Exedy clutches. As dunx correctly says its called "clutch thrash"

The springs in the centre plate arnt under tension when off the throttle, with the vibration of the engine these springs tend to vibrate and spin around which creates the noise.

It normally shuts up after a couple of thousand miles when some clutch dust gets around them

Hope this helps

Cheers guys... I'm looking to replace mine in the next few days and this seems to be the firm favourite (03 Blobeye STi 6Ssp g/box with PPP). Just been reading loads of threads on this one particular brand though..... Its a decision between this 'Pink' uprated one or the standard Exedy Organic one.... decisions decisions...

Incidentally.... does anybody know if this 'issue' is apparent in the standard Exedy Organic unit?

Thanks.....

Isn't the standard organic clutch not much better than stock if you have modified c.320/330 and are experiencing slippage ?

No... not yet.... I'm checking out Ricky's on Sunday (hopefully) and its been recommended by a few people personally. I'm just trying to work out if I'm better off getting the standard Organic (and saving money) or future-proofing by getting the uprated pink.....

Power-wise... I don't anticipate exceeding 380ish BHP and similar torque so looking at something that could easily handle 400-430 ft/lbs torque....

The OE 2.5 STi clutch is reported to handle 400 lbft + torque - its whether it would be compatible with earlier STis (flywheel?) and can be bought for a comparative cost to the likes of a stage 2 Exedy or AP.
Lateral are doing a deal on a suitable clutch at the moment:

Thought the FD12T was this?:

FD12T : Exedy Clutch Europe, Performance Clutches

So what's that clutch kit rated to for hp/lbft?
