All classic STI's are imports (we dont count the P1 as an STI because its not based 100% on any factory JDM STI ) so you will need import insurance, though im not sure what version 6 type R you will get tor 6.5k though, you may get a version 5 for that with 80+k on the clock or a good low mileage version 4 type R.

For £6500 you could buy a clean unmolested one owner WRX STi UK MY2002. It might not have the raw performance of an STi 6 import but it may offer several advantages and advising someone on a car is very difficult because a lot has to do with their personal preferance.
Without great expenditure you could probably take the STi 2002 to 340 bhp or near that figure and have a blend of civil performance that will serve you well for years to come.
Down to personal preferance really.

99% of the time if it as a rear wiper it's an Import.

Imports are not necessarily more expensive to insure.

Japanese Import Classics are refered to as "Versions" 1 to 6 WRX/STi/RA/R, V-Ltd and Ltd in Saloon and the STi Wagon spec.

UK Cars are Turbo 2000, Sports and GL's. And there are different Specials about, RB5, P1.

If you want raw and toys, japanese cars are the way to go. UK cars will have the Franchise dealer backup not as much power and a few less toys.

Most UK Subaru Franchise Dealers get arsey with Imported Jap models.

Some good Bugeye STi's around for the money you have but as always buyer beware.

Most performance Scoobs are Ins Gp 19/20.

The new age cars have stronger everything over a classic, and as for KTC, well if you want a patched up knackered model buy from there!

Good to hear you are getting back to scoob's mate.
I love classics, but would like a newage for the comfort factor.

easy mate yea i miss it so much and i regret getting rid of my last one but what can you do when you got no money the only thing i dont like about the new age is they look like so many other cars now where as the classic is unique imo obioviously saying that tho i do like the hawkeye model but i imagine you are more restricted to what you can do power wise and the exhaust note with the emissions etc
