Slippery when wet!!!!
I've owned my Scoob ( V2 '555' STI ) for about 9 months now, and today I had to drive it in the damp for the first time ( its a garage queen ) to borrow my mates ramp for an oil change. The allignment is spot on, the tyres which are Fulda's have 5-6mm on them and are inflated to 30 psi alround, I dont drive it that hard, but I thought it would of had loads more grip and traction in the wet.
I used to have a UR Quattro with about 360bhp which even in the rain was unbelievable, the scoob however was oversteering and drifting on the roundabouts near me, and even in a straight line was spinning all four wheels and crabbing, looked great but not very confidence inspiring.
The car is running standard STI suspension and has about 330 bhp. Does this sound normal or is something else amiss???. In the dry it's great, but in the wet it's worse than my C2 2.7 Alpina which is rear wheel drive

Doesn't sound right to me. Admittedly, mine is a new-age with only 280ish bhp, but I can floor mine in monsoon conditions and it just grips and accelerates. Goodyears all round on mine.
I was chatting to a Lancia Integrale owner a while ago who said that he could swap lanes on a wet motorway by accelerating hard, so maybe that's normal for a true hardcore rally car.

I know there not 'Brand tyres' but could they really make the grip that bad. I used to work in the tyre industry and did'nt think Fulda's we're that bad. What the hell would it be like on budget tyres

I have a 95 Wrx and am running Toyo T1r's, I find the grip in the wet more then satisfying I don't get any drama at all, maybe a slight bit off understeer but thats when I push it quite hard.
I would have thought it's the tyres that are causing the lack off grip.

Probably the tyres (T1R's and GSD3's are good from personal experience) but have to ask, how old are the shocks? A new standard set transformed my wagon, and I didn't think they were that bad before I changed them.

Trashed a non turbo scoob on budget tyres in the wet, on when I bought 'em, just following another car guv.
Lesson learnt. Scary, thinking how many accidents must be out there on budget tyres.

Tyres were on the car when I bought it, they were put on quite recently by the previous owner and they've got 5-6mm of tread left. The quattro was putting out 340 ft/lb of torque so more than the scoob although it was quite a bit heavier which would help. The shocks are new Bilsteins and the bushes throughout are new items. Thank god I don't plan to drive it in the wet!!

+1 on the vredistiens they are fantastic i also had budget on my car two when i first had it, its only got the standard 220bhp and it used to fishtail and slide everywhere.
now with the vreddys its planted. very highly regarded tyre on hear along with the goodyears.

i had the same issue when i was running similar power to yours a while back. i got a rear anti roll bar drop links fitted and fast road geomtry and that helped a lot regardless type rs are all tail happy in the wet you can buy what ever tyres you want in the wet you go round corners at speed back end is coming out.
it was frustrating though on a stright line the car used to snake but the rear anti roll bars with drop links should help and some decent tyres

Good God, not Kumho's, had a set once, the quickest way of finding out what was the other side of the nearest hedge, even at low speed.

Rubbish! I have had 2 sets of Kumho Supras on my 370ps MY00 and never had or come close to visiting the otherside of the hedge.
The more I read in these forums the more I realise that driver preferences/styles effect the percieved handling characteristics. I have experience and dislike off Michelins, Pirelis, Bridgestones, Kumhos and Nankang. I like Toyo, Goodyears, Vredestien. Just the same as some people like lairy rear antiroll bars and I prefer the understeer of the softer OEMs.
It's not rubbish tho, the Kumho's are still sh1te IMHO. As for not visiting the otherside of the nearest hedge, maybe you're not trying hard enough

The compounds used can change from month to month even though the model numbers stay the same so one set/pair of tyres can be completely different to another set. Also tyre age has a lot to do with it, there are four numbers moulded into the tyres which indicate the month and year of manufacture. They will look something like (1209), indicating the tyre was manufactured in Dec 2009. Some tyres can have been sitting in a warehouse for years drying out, so IMHO you need to make sure you check these type of things when buying tyres.
