Default Reset ECU without PC?

Hi All,

I think the answer will be no, but is there any way to reset the ECU on a 2006 STI without a pc etc, i have left my lead at work until Tuesday
Because I have to use two types of unleaded, BP and Sainsburys, because lack of Shell around, after about 2 months or less, the car starts to hesitate, flat spot and usually a reset sorts it out again.

If there is a battery within the ECU and it's easy to get to, then removing that will reset. I'm not sure about the 'Remove Main Car Battery' idea would work?

I've seen it on a blobeye, don't see any difference, in the extreme take the kick panel off the passenger footwell and remove the ECU from the harness, there is no battery backup on the board.

If the ECU has no internal battery, then the power comes from the Car Battery.

Is the ECU Reset by removal of power?

The lead I have is a CAN addapter. I work for a OEM designing, building new vehicles so read the engine data etc. All CAN on OBD 2 compliant cars are the same, 1996 i think the date was. With ECU Explorer I can read fault codes, watch engine Data and reset the ECU. I think on the hawkeye the ECU is in the center console?

1.3 will work for 2001-2007, OP 2.0 for 2001-present. Ut also allows you to log without a laptop(log to microSD), i love that.

Erm, what am i looking at that site?

I just find every now and again mine seems to drop in power. I go back to AF who puts map back on again and it's off like a rocket again.

I would just like to do the reset myself.

That won't read the SSM extended parameters I don't think, the ECU is still in the footwell.

For someone who claims to work with this stuff, the frequency with which you confuse and mix-up simple technical terms is a bit worrying. Suggests you don't know the subject very well.

I've not personally seen it, but it's been in the passenger footwell since the classics through to the blobeye's.

I dont claim to I do. I dont need to know all the data as I have guys working for me that do. The simple question was if the "learned" memory would reset if the batter was disconected or not. Where is the mix up between K line and L ine on OBD 2?

Just got the info from my files, the device we use reads to ISO 9141-2 CAN.
Here is the link to where we got it from.

ISO/SAE-Interfaces

Yes, this is what I meant by you mixing your abbreviations up.

Your device is not using "ISO9141-2 CAN", it is using ISO9141 K-line to make the data link to the ECU. CAN is a completely different form of vehicle networking. You can get interfaces that are capable of connecting via ISO and CAN, but they're different flavours and don't both happen at the same time.

Saying you're using "K and L Line CAN" is a bit like saying you're eating baked beans sweetcorn.

Here is the link to where we got it from.
ISO/SAE-Interfaces
Notice the complete lack of the word "CAN" on that page.

Maybe you should correct your files.

Oh - Gazthehat - the cable you need is a "VAG.com compatible" or "bare ISO" interface. If you see anything that has an "ELM" chip, it won't work in proper Subaru Select Monitor mode, and thus isn't much use to you.

lol CAN is just a phrase we use. We use J1939 CAN Protocol, J1708 CAN Protocol, CanOpen protocol and write all our own programs for our on board ecu's. CAN is a desription on a system linked by ECU's lol I wasnt going in to the detail! I wasnt talking CAN Protocols etc, just a meaning of connectin to a ecu thats all. Thats like arguing when someone says "Connect the wires up" and some smart **** says "Its not wires, its multicore"

Who's we? People in your company?

Controller Area Network is a specific set of protocols for inter-and intra-vehicle communication, not a generic description for "all forms of vehicle communication", which is how you appear to be using it.

I wasnt going in to the detail! I wasnt talking CAN Protocols etc, just a meaning of connectin to a ecu thats all.
Yes, I get that you were generalising. The trouble is that the generalisation you were using was inaccurate. The reason why I pulled you for it, apart from the fact that you're factually incorrect, is because, otherwise, we'd probably see a post on here in a few weeks where someone asks why the CAN cable he's bought on eBay on the basis of your post won't connect to his bugeye. Better to correct it now than do so then.

Thats like arguing when someone says "Connect the wires up" and some smart **** says "Its not wires, its multicore"
...or indeed twisted pair. Generalisations are fine. Incorrect or potentially misleading generalisations aren't.
