JPN spec MY2001 breaking in ??
#1
Hi all,
As some may know from earlier posts I am waiting on delivery of a MY2001 Japan spec STI with 460 kms on ODO.
I have seen some of the 'breaking in' comments and I am now a little worried.
Lets say that for some strange reason the car was thrashed for the first 460 kms, but now I will treat it properly....will this have ruined my engine, suspension, steering etc ??
I also heard that for the first 500 miles one should never exceed 4000 rpms, but that after that a quick spurt to 6000 rpms every now and then is ok until about 1000 miles. Then after 1000 miles one can redline it once and a while. Is this correct ?
I hope my 'new' engine ain't ruined
Thanks for the help,
Ray

definitely preferable to have taken it easy for the first few hundred at least. Best thing to do is for you to look after it once you get it, and run it in exactly as you're suggesting Mate. And make sure you get the oil done at 1,600kms. And, get a decent oil.....

I'm saying this tentatively but I think the main concerns with not running an engine in properly come as it gets much older. At 80,000 miles for example you are more likely to have a smokey, rattling engine in poor health. In the short term there is some credability in stating that your car would actually be a fair bit looser, smoother and faster. You could look at the state of the clutch for evidence as to whether it has been really abused. An oil change would not go amiss when you take delivery to remove metal particles which build up as the engine beds in initially.
If the deal is done and thre's nothing you can do, don't worry - just enjoy it.

Thanks guys appreciate the input.
By the way, does anyone know the best oil for a MY2001 JPN spec STI running in a hot environment like The Bahamas. I have seen some conflicting reports in here. I assume synthetic is a must ?
Thanks again guys

Defo fully synth - but as for viscosity - good Q. Because of the hot environment, I'd suggest a 10W50, but there again, I'd bow to someone else's better judgment....
