No, the UK car was 208 bhp, and had a lot of "toys" missing.

The imports were 240+ bhp afaik, or maybe more.

My current is a moderately modded 97 import and its far better

Very few parts that are any different TBH, everything is pretty easy to get on an import.

I thought the imports had more power and more toys? It would follow that there are much more then a few parts which differ.

The Pedigree is the thing which cannot be had from an Import .... and. for that reason, I'm out

imports only make 260+ on 100 ron fuel,so while your paying extra for your octane booster etc... we are using normal fuel and spending the extra on goodies for the car.

Then we come to re-sale values ....... UK = £x ...... JDM = £x - y where y is the discount required to sell.

They do not make 260bhp

Mine made 260lbft of torque!?!
It was doing 13.2 quarter miles with a cat back exhaust and a panel filter LOL,
They are leagues ahead of the early imports IMHO
And leagues ahead of the Uk car

From the vast research i did at the time, they are bassically an STI without a few of the tarty bits, plus the stock pistons.

Some of the major differences that i remember

90mm maf (sti3/22b size)
STI 3 TMIC painted black (the uk intercoolers have smaller end tanks
440 injectors (sti 3/22b)
VF22 turbo (sti 3/4 got the smaller vf23/24 iirc)
STI gear box
STI rear lights
STI rear spoiler on most of them
Gold WRX sticker on the rear (early slower ones had a white one usually)
Stock UK TMIC y piece (worth upgrading to samco)
The fuel cut set @ 1.45bar on my car as standard.
Rear wiper
Proper climate control

I know of a chap who uses this forum, bought a 97 uk wagon and bolted on all the 97wrx parts, ran a boost controller and achieved around 370bhp from the setup.

The 97-98 WRX is superior to the UK car in every way,

I fitted a full decat, panel filter and a boost controller (set to 1.40/1.44bar) on the stock ecu for 3 years without any issue at all, and it was fast, it slaughtered my mates new fq300 at crazy speeds bar one minor niggle when i held it on the rev limiter in 5th gear for around 5/10 mins, but that's really a user error

The best thing about the early imports IMO is the TD05 turbo, which is a real workhorse IMHO

There is always a load of misinformation surrounding the later WRX cars, as a lot of people don't realise just how sweet the stock setup is.

Pete, they are all worth **** all now as they are so old, i watched the prices of the slower uk cars drop faster then the wrx ones when people started cottening onto the better wrx spec.

Of course if you are a bit frail and old, you may have trouble controlling such a powerful car, so i don't blame you for getting the "cooking" version of a proper subaru saloon

They are a bit like a kid riding a tricycle before moving onto a mountain bike

My mate bought his 97 uk car a few months before i bought my 97 wrx, and he constantly said that he bought the wrong car...

sorry but some people talk bollocks on here.
bolting on the wrx bits to a uk car and getting over 300bhp????
(wish it was that easy)
funny you cant do anything with the ecu on 97/98 cars so how can you run over 300 on standard ecu?
looked into this when i got mine 4 months ago and went to alan jeffery for my advive and think he knows bit more than most on here.

And did you test where your fuel cut was .................
Increase boost, check for det, double check fueling, repeat.

I am glad you got your sorted by paying somebody else though, i preferred to fit an apexi to mine when i installed the ej257 bottom end, and then i mapped it myself......................

IIRC the wagons run a little bit more compression ratio.

I believe pat from scooby clinic managed to do something with the 97ecu at some point, although he would not divulge all the gorey details, your mapper misinformed you a little

I seem to remember Pat mentioned on a thread on 22B IIRC that he had the LC and ALS coding for a Z4 ecu.

sorry didnt realise was talking to a tuner with 30 years of knowledge.....
esl were looking into the 97/98 ecu but nothing has come of it.no-one has been able to re-map this ecu thats why you have to fit apexi/simtek etc...
oh and my car was standard(now running over 250 with sensible mods) when i got it and have done all the work myself seeing as i have been a qualified mechanic for nearly 20 years and have just transfered from the rifles to the rlc as a vm for the british army(thats vehicle mechanic to civvies.what do you do by the way???
