Red face Did You Know?

New proposals will be introduced which will mean that it will be an offence to simply be a registered keeper of an uninsured vehicle - even if the vehicle is not being driven.

Right now you can only be prosecuted if you're uninsured and caught behind the wheel. But, all of this will change, and no evidence that the car was in use will be required.

I wonder how that will affect me and how they police it.
When I buy a car in the UK it it taxed and tested and I insure it in France. When I get it back I then get it French registered.

At this stage its just hot air, It will never become law, There are to many exemptions that will need to be written into the defence.
I think they move towards a SORN type law for insurance too but there will never be compulsory insurance for all vehicles owned.

load of s@it. They cannot expect every personal owned car in the uk to be insured at anyone time? I have heard about it though.thought it was to be implemented last year?

Can't see this being enforcable. They can't track all the cars that are on the road uninsured, let alone those that are off the road without insurance.

Surely that is already a legal requirement, for a car to be on the road it must be taxed, insured and MOTed(If applicable)

Yes, but it is MUCH simpler to check that EVERY registered car is Insured .... driven or not .... you can see the logic of it, they then know which cars to crush and which registered keeper to fine.

no, a car doesn't have to be insured or mot'd to be parked on the road, just taxed.

surely you don't need me to explain how a car can sit on the road with no mot no insurance but almost a years tax until the tax expires?

When you renew the tax at post office you need insurance and mot (if 3 or more years old) to get tax. When you tax online they check mot and ins via computer dont they ?
Think thata why mot is now linked direct to transport dept ?

I think it is a good idea. My car is taxed, MOT'd and insured so I expect ever other ****** to do the same. If they don't then they deserve to have their nuts chopped off. If the car has to be laid up anywhere then if it is declared SORN then this should cancel the need for any of the above (one form/phone call for the lot). Make it simple for the law abiding and as difficult as possible for the dodgy b*stards.

I does.

If every vehicle needs Insurance then any that are not can be crushed ... it's a great idea - I look forward to watching my local bobbies going into the Pikey Camp and taking their BMW's and Mercs away for crushing

this was supposed to be inforced last january but if you think about it all they have to do is look on the sorn register to see which cars aren't insured simples

I am sure i read it was any car that isn't SORN'd needs to be insured.

Not sure how a race car would work Paul. In the eyes on the DVLA i suppose it doesn't 'exist' so should be fine.

that is the way I believe it works

if you sorn no (legal) need for insurance or tax

so if it is not sorned it is deemed to be "on the road" even if kept in a private garage

the trick is not to think whether it is on a road or in a garage but just whether it is sorned or not

it is not a difficult concept tp grasp

They fail to enforce the law as it stands, so obviously what the police need is yet another poorly considered law....

It's not poorly considered - either a car is SORN or it is Insured ... if it is neither, then it is crushed.

I think it makes it much simpler .... no more trying to 'catch' a driving un-insured driver - just turn up at the address of any unisured and un SORNed car and drag it away.

It's so logical - it should be brought in NOW!

Sorry, but I'm with Prasius on this. This is yet another law being created to try and fix a problem that just needs better policing.

The whole SORN thing is annoying enough. If I own a car and choose to keep it in my garage on my property and not tax it for the road then why should I have to tell the government I am doing that. The only time I should need to tell the governemnt anything should be when I put it back on the road.

If the legal system wasn't so lax and people got proper penalties for breaking the law as reagrds untaxed and uninsured vehicles then there would be no need for introducing yet more legislation that will only hit the generally law abiding citizen anyway.

Yet more red tape from the police state!!!

Yes but they've not yet turned it in to an offence whereby if the computer says "no insurance" then you're guilty rather than innocent until proven guilty in a Court of Law ... sound familiar?

I agree, this should be brought in now, get rid of these uninsured gits who drive up my premiums, crush them all (and the cars).

I'm fed up to the back teeth of being branded guilty for stuff under umpteen new Laws & having to prove my innocence It makes life nice & easy for the Govt yet troublesome for the Man In The Street.
