Default pod tips-launch, tyres and tuning?

hey all how can i best increase my times at santa??? i own a 1996 sti v-limited mods include 18'prodrives with eagle f1's (225/35/18 all round), turbo back exhaust, air filter, ssqv, and shes been mapped for esso 97 an for some reason boosts to 18psi/1.5 bar! i already have a set of 16' wrx wheels with 195/45/16 toyo proxy r888's do you lot think these wheels will throw a better strip time than my prodrives?

i was launching at about 4000rpm letting the clutch out fast with a little/minimal spin, best way to launch?

is launch control and antilag the best route to take for drag times or would i be better of getting an uprated turbo and map?

could my suspected stock clutch be slipping on full bore changes but be fine during normal driving, felt like she was spinning or slipping a little in 4th? ? ?

i ran a 13.61 last sunday, bit greasy but still pretty slow ive been told... p.s was my first ever 6 runs!

dont let me down ppl

If your planning on doing lots of launching at a drag strip, the least you will need is and uprated clutch and eventually a new gearbox!

What ecu do you have?

The more torque you load the more likley the clutch is to slip, if it's started then it will 'only' get worse.

18psi is actually 1.24bar which exeeds your fuel cut limit so you may find a fuel cut defender fitted, your standard ECU cannot be remapped, only chipped or have the ESL Daughterboard fitted and mapped, it is located in the passenger footwell, pull the carpet back and remove the kick plate you will then see the ECU, remove, open and check.

Personally I've found the best method of launching is at around 5-6krpm, slight lift off the clutch to get moving a bit, then drop it completely. You need to nail the gear changes too, feel when power is trailing off and get it into the next gear. My first ever run in a 04 WRX with just an exhaust netted me 13.2 - and my car is a lot heavier!

Then a 12.8 with my again heaver STi with just an exhaust.

Put your timing data up for advice.

Your 18"s won't be ideal.

cheers bat, ill check that tonight! well the cars actually boosting on a bar boost guage so its 1.5 bar . . .! maybe its overboosting? i'll check the ecu, theres def not a mbc so im hoping its not standard! as for the wheels my r888 laden white powdered 16' wrx wheels arrived yesterday!

nice times, 11.7 with 340hp is better than i thought possible, guessing that at the wheels?

At the fly.

Some gauges are known to over-read, notably Defi's.

right, the ecu has 7d wrote on it with various numbers, it also has some writing in biro pen on the metal casing, scooby ecu and 1.1 bar td05... so if its a stock ecu im guessing it must have a sisterbourd right? mapped for the stock turbo, 1.1 bar esso 97 i guess??? i was told it was mapped for esso! apart from the dealer book i have very few receipts for stuff, well one infact bar the security, uprated walb fuel pump!

Open the case and check the bottom right corner for a chip. It sounds like you have a PolarPerformance chip or simlar.

i've been told they jus fit, hope they do anyhow! they're only 195's reckon they'll grip better than 225 eagles?

also just bought some powerflex rear arb links, which size arb should i go for 22mm adjustable?

is it worth touching the front arb set up, ive read its not?

cheers again ppl, i will build a low twelve high eleven reliable drag/track weapon !

clutch suggestions?

also read that the sti3 lump comes forged out the box?? is it worth the time and expense of an sti3 swap or am i better of sticking with the version 2 for my needs?

get the 18" wheels off it and get the the 16" back on it. 0-60 times will be lower. the bigger wheels in efect take the gearing up. it will slow you top end down but over a 1/4 you are going to benafit more from the 0-60 with the power you have.

this is my logic prob get told im wrong now

Love the Stella reflecting. Does feel good finishing jobs like that, suspension and brakes are quite fun jobs and very rewarding.

Wouldnt advise swapping engines as they all have problems, not just with pistons. Budget in for a good rebuild when/if the current engine lets go.

Definately best to build an engine, and i stress do it well! I just experienced the full roth of a poorly built engine.

Whats the spec of your current exhaust? All of it.

Mine sounds like what you described lol but i dont mind it, although i havent really got plans for track days yet.

You may have to look into an actual race exhaust, something like a group n rally exhaust. Im sure theres someone on here with some ideas for quieter exhausts. Maybe have some silencers welded into what you have?

Smart looking motor, white wheels are loads better low rider now!

There are some makes of exhaust that are quieter, maybe look into the ones you can put a bung in?
