is there any way of telling if an ecutek ecu has had a remap. if it had, it would mean it would be cheaper for amother one if needed wouldn't it

The only way to find out is a mapper with ecutek software plugs his computer into your diagnostic port and checks if there is a licence or not .If there is a licence the mapping next time will be cheaper

Just throwing this out there as a hypothetical question...

What would happen if you tried to map an un-licensed ECU?

An ecutek dealer can't map an unlicensed ecu without selling you a license.

I can though. Also any OS tuner will be able to tell you whether an ecu has been remapped (whether ecutek or open source)

Is it a can't or a won't?

It's something I've pondered about for a while. I've had other other vehicles mapped without the need for the purchase of a license..

They can't with their ecutek software and are precluded by Ecutek afaik to use open source software like I use that can remap without the need for the ecutek licence.
