Default broken my ecu

bought a polar performance chip and got it fitted to the
cars ecu (96 wrx, z4 ecu)

now the car wont work when i connect the ecu the
check engine light flashes and the relays start clicking like mad, have tried
toi re solder the j1 resisto but makes no difference, so i am guessing my ecu is fooked.

anyone know where i can get a replacement z4 ecu or failing that
an ecu with a spare socket so can run it off the polar chip.

dont fancy spending £150 on ebay for an ecu that might not even work, i have heard too many dodgy stories.

so any suggestions?

Have you tryed contacting Scott @ PP?? I know he is very busy at the moment but he is usually very helpful.

I fudged my first one up too, ended up doing and exchange with Scott. It ran but such was the 'quality' of my 'workmanship' it started to play up, however when i reconnected the J1 it ran fine again

You haven't by any chance left the green and black test wires connected??

You dont have to buy a z4 ecu just buy any 4 plug one and fit the chip you will get the same results. You can pick them up for as little as £30.

And some of the 4 plug ECU's already have the socket soldered in as standard so it is literally plug and play.

I think the STI, (is it a 6K?) and the Z5 already have it I think. Scott should know which ones for sure.

just thought i would make it clear after re-reading my original post,

scott / polar performance didn't fit the chip, i wish he did cos it would have worked then.
i looked at the space for the chip and considered fitting it myself before i realised
it was beyond my ability. i have been looking at polars website and they sell ecu's with socket for £80. might see if he has got a z4 then can run standard or with the chip.

best offer so far for a z4 is £110 delivered.

i can handle driving the ka til payday if i have to. even though my head touches the roof!

so will any 4 plug ecu definitely work, (with the chip only obviously, unless its a z4)

and finally, did the 2nd version of imprezas, 256bhp 1995/6 all have a z4 ecu or is
there another that will work without the chip?

just runnin through options in case mr cockend supposed skilled solderer has fooked the chip as well as the ecu!

oh and b13 bat, i have never managed to even find the bloody green and black test wires never mind connect them. and believe me i have looked!

as above you dont need a z4 ecu, you need any 4plug ecu. i got a z4 ecu off ebay last week for 41 quid delivered. it works a treat too.

this one would do

cheers for the link, been looking at that, can i just confirm,

are you saying buy that and fit the chip and it will work,
or that it will just work as it is?

there is also a v5 ecu from a 95 wrx, does it have to be a z4 if
i dont want to fit the chip? so many different ecu's it confusing?

if you dont want to run the chip you need a z4, U8, 2C, W6, W9 (z4 will give 260ps others will give 240ps) and all of these ecus will run perfectly in your car on super unleaded.

if you want to run the chip then any ecu with work including the one i posted. if you buy anything other than a z4, w6 or u8 you will have to run the chip.

U8, 2C, W6, W9 - 1993/1994 WRX - 11.47psi
SA (STi chipped) - Ver1 STi (Sedan and Wagon) - 14.94psi
SB (STi chipped) - Ver1 STi-RA - 13.64psi
SC (STi chipped) - SAME AS Z4 - Ver2 STi Wagon - 12.78psi
Z4 - 1995/1996 WRX - 12.78psi
Z5 - 1995/1996 WRX-RA - 12.57psi
6K - Ver2 STi Sedan - 13.34psi
7K - Ver2 STi-RA - 13.19psi
Prodrive UK ECU (Prodrive Chipped) -- SAME AS 6K - 13.34psi
1C, 3B, V9, V5 - All WRX Wagons 10psi, dropping to 6.8psi
V7, 7D, 6D - 1993 to 1996 UK/Euro 11.47psi

dont forget once you fit that chip and cut the j1 resistior the map/boost on the main board is ignored and the car uses the map/boost on the chip.

top man, thats the info i was looking for, so the answer is the only
ecu that will keep the power @ 260 is z4, can use U8, 2C, W6, W9 but will only
get 240ps. or can use any 4 plug ecu with chip and j1 cut.

now i know my options, not sure what to do yet cos dont know if
my chip is knackered, ecu with socket fitted and new chip is £280 from polar performance so if they got a z4 then think thats what im gonna do. i could even fit a switch to the j1 resistor to have 2 maps? or would that not work?

You could also remove the J1 and fit a switch and have two maps.

Apparently not. You just need to do it with the engine off or at tick over. Me and Scott posted about this a few years ago.

This does work, as I did it with my ScoobyECU / U8 ECU. I have a switch in a panel below the radio.

However, it probably isn't worth the effort - I can't remember the last time I switched to the original U8 map - the ScoobyECU is so much smoother, pulls harder and actually uses less fuel!

Just fitted a polar performance chip with ecu about 2 hours ago to my mates 1995 wrx auto. It was a different ecu to the 1 i took out ,but car seemed to run ok ,on the short blast round the estate. It was just a simple plug in and away you go.I will post up in the morning the ecu taken out and the ecu fitted.
