From: Slowly rebuilding the kit of bits into a car...
The parent company is massive, I doubt they'd let S.U.K. go down, but who knows there is a recession on.... I'm taking my savings out ready for the sell-off auction if they did !

a while a go my local dealer (welch's cambridge) had no new cars to sell. They said the uk importer couldn't make a profit due to the exchange rate or something so wasn't bringing in any cars, that was in December time.

Oh and they also said sales were steadily on the decline since the classic shape went out in about 2001! Plus nobody wants the hatch shape they all want a saloon with a whopping spoiler for it to be a 'proper' scooby.

I assure you Subaru UK have not gone bust and sales whether you believe it or not are on the up.
They are about to launch a new revised website at www.subaru.co.uk in the very near future, check for yourselves in a few days, they would'nt be doing that if they gone bust now

So they did'nt read the report giving 2003 as the best ever sales year for the Impreza?

Subaru UK is part of International motors group. Sole "official" UK importer of Subaru, Isuzu and Daihatsu. IM Group :: Timeline
They haven't gone bump.
People, if you claim to be a Subaru enthusiast, at least try and make an effort in knowing how they originally came to be sold in this country

IM Group :: STRONG 2009 SALES SUCCESS FOR THE UK
216% rise in December completely failing to mention that year on year they were down 21% and that was on the woeful 2008 figures.

As biased as you may be you are on the money. The hatch is the car that virtually nobody wants.

Does this fall under the 10% bull**** part of the 100% internet truths?!

I think it's laughable that people think the Impreza is solely IM's cash cow....
Subaru are not really interested in that image anymore, they reconise it's not pc to market these gas guzzling, rear finned, asbo orientated, "anti-euro green image" powerful monsters..it's just the sign of the times.... the New Legacy is Subaru's new image, soft and cuddly with creature comforts and a diesel engine...get over it peeps...
Canadian Subaru sales are up 45% Jan 2010, with 2009 15% up from 2008, do you really think they will take any notice of a group of Impreza enthusiasts (who, lets face it, the majority haven't contributed a £ to Subaru profits for the last 10 years) or the masive "middle of the road" market everywhere else. (which is earning them millions)
The days of WRC Subaru and OTT Impreza's are over...stop bleeting on about it ffs!
The Ausi's have a name for the Brits (other than pom).. Whenwe's
When we were in Britain it was great too...
When we were in Britain we could...
Scoobynet is full of whenwe's too....
when we won the WRC
when we drove the fastest car in the street..
when we were the envy of every rally nut in our postcode
and now
when we had an Impreza that beat all of it's rivals in looks and performance (and reliability )
Yawn

a: Photograph's like a 2 bagger
b: Looks 300% better on the move as opposed to stationary.
I've spent many a minute looking at my hatch, and I agree, from some angles it looks wrong... the bonnet is too long or is at wrong angle to the rest of the car, I'm not sure why and I'm not pretending I know better than Subaru.
But
From other other angles, perticullarly when following it (or being followed) it looks wide, low, aggressive and focused... it just one of those cars that looks great in motion, not standing still... the light catches the flared arches, the wheels fill the arches, the LED lights look great at night, the wheel track width in relation to the body width just looks "right". The shape of the front headlights along with the scoop give a scowlling effect which matches the persona it's obviously aiming for.
I never got good comments about my 2003 STI (other than friends),
With the 2008 STI, I regularly get people coming over to me at fuel stations saying "wow, looks better than I expected" or "I didn't like them at 1st, but it's actually a nice looking car". Now I admit I've put the rally armor flaps on, and also the Prodrive quad exhaust which improves it's looks over the standard car, but it's still turning heads.
And the fact Subaru haven't sold many WRX's, and even less STI's, I'm quite glad of...

So factoring out the recession can we work out why their sales have still plummeted? Let me think

IMO the rest of the range bar the impreza was more akin to a wet fish.
The impreza was the star seller in the UK at least, countless publications put the whole rally/impreza thing down as the saviour of Subaru, i cant account for the rest of the word.
The legacy looks quite nice, and AWD is a bonus, but the quality of the car is not a match for its rivals, they are thisty machines, and generaly not up to scratch compared with the competitors.
The forrester could have been a decent selling machine in the UK, especially with the mini SUV type thing the brits seam to like, but like the rest of the range, the quality is crap, the machines are thirsty, and they look like a dogs ****.
The outback is OK`ish but its not a mass market car.
People are right in thinking that Subaru dont want the whole asbo/rally/impreza type image anymore, the problem is they have nothing else half decent in the reserve tanks, i do think they should have maybe put more resources into something like the legacy, while still giving the asbo people what they want, i would hazard a guess that they would be in a lot stronger position, at least in the short term, maybe in the long term.
Subaru = 1 hit wonder that kept trying to reinvent its number 1 single for faaaar toooo long, instead of bringing out a platinum album
