Default Maybe getting WR1 quick help needed pls:-

Hi all, ive not been on here very long, but have been reading and learning for a while.

Today I have been to see a 04 reg WR1. Now I have looked all around the car and have been out in it, everything runs nice and it feels tight etc.

It has around 30k miles on it and the owner wants around 14k for it. On an initial inspection I have noticed a few things I just want a little help with, here they are:-

The oil is mint colour wise (Lightish brown not black) and was at the full mark. The radiator cap upon removal had a very small amount of what looked like blue/green slime on the rubber seal (Not in the water though, that looked clean blue/green colour) which I have never seen on a car before. Could this rad cap thing be a potential expensive issue later down the line, such as a gasket on its way out etc?

The paint on the passenger door doesn't look as smooth as smooth and as good as the finish on the opposite side, so I am assuming that at some point its had a blow over because of a scratch possibly. Or are these cars known to have some paint defects from the factory. It just looks like its been brushed in along the door edge closest to the bonnet?

On the inner arches the paint looks slightly bubbley and there is a tiny bit of surface rust to be seen, but nothing major tbh. Is this common with all Scoobs of this age (04 / 54).

Lastly the car has got a straight through exhaust system (No silencers) and a panel filter fitted with a remap. The car is apparently running around 350bhp + / -. Are these moderate mods. for a WR1 and should I be worried about buying a car with these mods fitted or not. I am told the boost is increased very slightly.

Lastly if there is any other advice that can be given as regards things to look out for then i'd be really grateful to hear them.

I really want to go and get the car now, but need to find out the answers to the above first really, so as I know i'm not making any mistakes..

Sorry for the long boring post, any help from experienced members would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Carlos

Try the WR1 owners forum for advice - I had a WR1, great car but sold it as soon as the warranty expired, which I regret now.

Bubbles on a 6 year old car isnt a good thing it took 11 years of uk weather to start that on my Version 5 STI, but just dont buy the first one you see, there are lots out there and you have lots of time, rush in and regret buying tbh, and for 14k you should see what cars you could buy

Cheers Tony, when I said bubbles I didn't mean like bubbling badley, i'm talking about under the arches where they fold under and all the water from the road sprays off the wheels etc The bubbling is like a few 1-2mm dots on this part of the arches, and the rust is purely surface which would come straight off with a clay bar...Are these cars prone to rust at all?

The underbelly of the car is mint and so is the interior, not a scrape in sight on the side skirts, exhaust or anywhere. If i'm honest i'm being really picky as the car is mint all over for its age, and the because its low milage and a ltd edition i'm very tempted.

Not sure what to do really. Youre right though I should ideally wait, but its easier said that done sometimes.

These are not normally prone to rust, you may get some surface rust on joints in the engine bay or by the boot water run, not really around where you say, though the chances are your still better getting a HPI and a checkover before buying anyhow

And before you go running off have a look at this:-

Subaru : subaru impreza 2.0 turbo sti pro drive

He say's its an 04 model but its an MY05 car (the extended rear arches give this away) 2 k cheaper and with those upgrades over the WR1 plus less miles and 2k less.

All I can say is, I have had my "1" for nearly 4 years and love it to bits. I would be very hard pressed to find anything to replace it.
I have no bubbles, so sorry I can't really comment.
You will enjoy it, if you decide to go for it

I had a MY03 Spec C, it was a far better car than the WR1 produced 316bhp without having to be remapped from 262bhp was quicker in gear and through the gears, it was basic, handled better and was a fantastic car nothing would match that (and that includes my type R ) but each scoob has its + and - points, in reallity the better engines in the JDM's just give me more confidence

Well and truely what to do at the moment. In my heart I want it but really I know I should wait, as I haven't looked at many really.

Any light to be shed on the small greenish slime / residue on the rad cap seal?

That slime is probably just the coolant, but remember what I said about the MY05 cars over the MY04

This is an insight what subaru UK do
2001, the new shape wrx turns up, they do a nice limited edition WRX 300 model, flog it for 25 ish k, 3 months later announce an STI model for 2002, pee'd lots of people off lol
2004 announced the "WR1", brought that out then revamped the car for 2005, upgrading the A-DCCD, interior and a few more sensors as well as changing the geometry of the car slightly to give it better handling (less understeer), lots of pee'd off owners again...

Its a great game of give me ya cash

Buy it mate. £14000 for a WR1 with 30k on the clock is quite cheap.

I bought the first WR1 I looked at, I shouldn't have really but it was absolutely mint.

Down the line I look at what I could have got now and if I had waited I could have got something with less miles but when I was looking there wasn't many for sale.

Go for it now, you won't regret it.

I think I know the one you at looking at. DEFINATELY BUY IT NOW!!

Plenty out there with low miles
Subaru : Bargain WR1
AUTOPRESTIGE CARS LTD : WR1 LOW MILES PAMPERED EXAMPLE
Subaru : SUBARU WR1
Subaru : SUBARU WRX STI WR1 ONLY 36K
Subaru : subaru impreza wr1 limited edition

And i think all but one is lower than 14k, one is even less than 12k

Tony

Look at a few before parting with your cash, plenty about so it is not like they will run out.

Heed Tonys words re 04/05 differences and also the many WR1's for sale that people have so kindly listed for you already

The oil and residue sound fine, the paintwork is another matter, suggest you get an AA/RAC/Scoob specialist to look over the car for you, £150 or so well spent considering the cost of the car and it is a performance motor.

Paint on the mid models 180 upwards seems patchy at best, on mine they managed to miss an entire section just under the bumper!

I personally would go for Subaru : subaru impreza 2.0 turbo sti pro drive as opposed to the WR1.Suppose its a question of what you like really.

Personally for me No.

I like the fact when I'm driving along I feel abit more 'special' than what I did in my other Subaru's. Okay, the car you listed is pretty much the same as the WR1 spec wise but for me it's the exclusitivity of driving a limited edition car. Just the same as when I see a RB320 or a P1.

If you like the limited edition tag go for the WR1, if not buy a STI PPP.

Hi folks, again cheers for the input and opinions. In the end I sat here for a long while thinking, and after considering the things I wasn't too keen on with the car I realised it would have cost me well over 1k to get the car how I would have liked it. I just wasn't 100%.

So ive had to leave it for now. Plus I have a trackday at Silverstone GP on the 30th of this month and would neve have passed the noise test.

Going to go for a Spec C or a MY05 now I think.

Thanks to all that have contributed.

Carlos.

Ive owned my Wr1 from new and i still love it ! Do you know the limited no of the car out of 500 ! check on the owners site for previous owners ,damage , writeoff etc !
for a few suspension mods you will have a scoob that will handle as good as any other !
ive been running with approx 350Bhp for 4 yrs with no probs and i drive the car hard as many on the wr1oc.co.uk can vouch for You wiil not regret getting a Wr1 weather its the one your looking at now or another and knowing its a limited editon is even better get some AP 6 pots and you will have an exellent motor ! i for sure wont be gettin rid of mine cant wait till i get another upgraded turbo and injectors
