How much oil does your sti use?
Well guys and girls.
I've recently enough changed from an 05 sti to a 03 jdm one. Both Had ~45000kms (28000miles) on them.
The 05 standard, the 03 has induction kit, full 3-inch turbo back de-cat and map.
The 05 burned about .5 or .75 of a litre of oil in 10,000km's
The 03 is burning about 0.5-0.6L in 1000km's!
In fairness i drive the 03 one harder more of the time than the 05.
I had the intercooler off at the weekend an noticed there was oil sitting in it, and the fins had a smearing of oil on them too.
I'd say there wasn't quite half a teaspoon of oil pooled between the butterfly into the intake and the rubber that joins the intercooler to the intake.
Anyone elses the same? Or is this on a slippery road to engine failure?
Cheers,
Robin

The only thing i can think of is the turbo seals maybe weak/failing and thats why you are getting the oil in the intercooler and throttle body area.
im sure some one who has more experience may give you a better answer.
cheers

The simplest one would be to interrupt the crankcase fumes from PCV to the turbo inlet pipe.
Cost would be about £45 with hoses. Swap to a thicker oil at the same time (what oil do you use?) should stop the oil use.
If it doesn't then there is a problem to look for.
There's a hose going from PCV to inlet -1 to 2 in picture below:

Connect long hose at 1 to inlet of oil catch tank.
Outlet of catch tank goes to point 2.
Keep an eye on the oil build-up in tank and empty it back at the oil filling point on a regular basis.
Here's the tank and 2 hoses I've installed:

Running somewhere around 330-340 Bhp. Daily driver but does get driven reasonably hard when the space and traffic allows. Not stupidly though. Rearly gets taken above 6500 Rpm

on my classic when the turbo seals went, i started getting allot of oil in the intercooler area and build up of oil near the throtle body. i changed the turbo and cleaned the intercooler and all was well. their wasnt anymore oil in the intercooler.
so before you go buying a catch can. you should check that that turbo is fine and also check the the PCV is opening and closing correctly as it should. This is normaly on under the throttle body on the inlet manifold. the PCV is usally open when driving normal (off boost) and cause crank case vapour to enter the inlet manifold. However on boost this is closed and crank case gases are diverted to the inlet pipe. which recycles this air. this can cause the intercooler to become oily. but its not as bad as you describe.
hope that helps

i posted the same Q last year for my 2.5, the findings were somewhat confusing at the time but have learnt to live with it. i had a similair problem stating that i seemed to be putting in around 0.5l every 700 or so miles which i thought was excessive, turns out that the 2.5 does (on average) burn more oil than the 2.0 but was told also from a reputable source that up to a litre every thousand miles should be looked at as acceptable! i use shell helix 10/40 and know of others that use around the same as me. not an ideal situation i know but there is nothing obvious to suggest a problem so as i said i just keep an eye on it. i have to say though that it pretty much needs the same amount of top up each time.

o2 jdm sti
uses .7 ltr 1000 miles I have learned to live with it.
dont get any smoke.
dont get any in the intake either must say though once had a leaking rocker gasket and a ltr went in a week.
check it every week now to be safe.

uk 02 sti didnt use any as standard< But since the moding started and mileage has gone up it uses a little.
I used to get a film in the intercooler and a drop in throttle body> a catch can cured it.
Although i guess i shouldnt moan as its on 90000 now, uses maybe half a litre every 1500/2000 miles
