Default MOT fail question

my impreza fail its mot earlier on:

offside rear fog lamp missing (it bloody aint i had to show him after how to turn it on)

offside rear registration plate lamp not working (bulb, fixed)

but the thing im most bothered about is...

offside and nearside rear (couldn't turn wheel freely when jacked up and handbrake off) mechanic brake component has restricted free movement.

offside and nearside rear wheel bearings. items not checked.

basically he said he cant turn the rear wheels freely to check the rear wheel bearings. i told him the cars got a rear lsd that would make it heavy but he didnt listen.

what the heck do i do about that ive jack the car up and can definatly turn the wheels with no problems, just heavy because the rear diff and driveshaft wheel is turning on the opposite side too.

so what do i do about that?

As above, sounds like the muppet factor ask them to jack up front and rear at the same time, support on stands and try with all wheels free to turn so they can check it again without fighting the LSD.

Mine failed recently too - for wrong colour headlights! Think they were probably right though I'll remove my HID conversion for the retest...

Wheel Bearings are checked by pushing/pulling at 12 and 6 o'clock ..... no real need to spin the wheels.

Go back and ask if they could NOT put the apprentice on the job this time .... kick off mate!

Ask for information to appeal the reason for rejection, he may suddenly have a change of heart.

What a crack head! The only reason he would have grounds to be concerned about the wheels not being able to turn would be due to brake faults. Bearings are only checked for play (left and right, up and down) Seriously, take it somewhere who does't employ the love child of Stevie Wonder and and Mr Bean.

MOT testers have to check for roughness in the bearing. This is done (strangely enough) by rotating the wheel!

The official line from VOSA...

"Rotate each wheel in turn and listen for any sound indicating roughness in the bearing"

If the tester can't spin the wheel freely because it's 4WD etc then it's not a reason to fail the car. Just in the same way that if the tester can't visually inspect the brakes because the car has a wheel trim fitted or can't inspect sill corrosion because the car has side skirts fitted. It's an advisory at best.

I find it interesting to hear the excuses and arguements that people come up with when their car has failed the test.

Examples..

"My mate down the pub said it would pass"

"I read on a forum that you don't have rotate the wheels to check bearings"

Either way, their inability to figure out how to turn a wheel should not indicate a fail surely???

The amusing thing being that several of the wheels must have been turning at some point or how else would the chuffing car be driven to the MOT station ;-)

This is a copied page from the MOT manual. He has to adhere to this!
If he still insists of failing your car, Then print this out and show him.
He probably won't thank you for telling him how to do his job. But hey, If he did his job properly in the first place then you wouldn't have to.
Hope this helps...

If the tester was happy to fail you on that, it was bound to end in tears.

Testers have always replaced my broken bulb there and then and charged a couple of quid for doing it.

Did he have the car up on a lift to test for the wheel bearings?

If unhappy with the failure and it ends up costing you extra for no reason then put in a VT17 form:
