Default Selling a car - how to deal with the 'chancers'

I've put our lass's car on pistonheads as she's having a new one.(no Impreza though)

Having done my homework I've pitched the one for sale at £16,000 as stealers have equivalent cars for around £18,000 - £18,500.00
Parkers guide price for private sale is £15,250.00
Our car is very tidy with FSH, another 9 months manufacturers warranty and a free 15,000mile service thrown in as well.

All I am getting are people emailing / calling claiming to have cash but want the car for less than 14k as I have pitched my car at "trade price". one guy claimed his brother had bought an identical for £13,200.00 6 months ago.........

How do you politely tell them to go away and stop wasting my time? its starting to get boring now.

Are there any genuine buyers out there?

cheers
Rob

Just tell em to go and find another one in the same condition to the one they found at 2.5k less expensive, if they hang the phone up then your sorted

At the moment it is a buyers market. Everyone will try to knock you down, in all honesty you would have been better putting it one to one and a half grand higher than you wanted so you could appear to be knocked down in price. Had this with a previous car sale so learnt my lesson then. Hope you get what you want for the car.

You have to be patient,of course there is loads of timewasters out there but you might end up turning a potential buyer away if you just speak your mind.

Good luck with the sale, it can be a nightmare! Just dont put any hope into anyone till they come and view.

When i was selling my M3 i had 5 pages of emails (hotmail account), and not one person who emailed me came to view!!

There are loads of time wasters and dealers who want cars for nothing about at the moment.

Set a price, take offers but have a bottom line. There are genuine buyers out there. It took me a little while but I eventually found two for my car - they come along like buses

Be patient and realistic and you'll get a good sale eventually. Good luck!

Thats what I find strangest of all - people are emailing and offering cash at a lot lower price and haven't even seen the car!

Maybe I'm old school but I'd rather see the car and then haggle on the price.

Its all a bit discombobulating if you ask me..

Cheers

Edit the ad' and politely put something like "due to timewasters I refuse to discuss the cost of the car until a person has actually seen it. Whilst I appreciate there maybe cars out there cheaper, I feel the condition of this one warrants its price. I am not interested in canvassers or any trade bids. By all means come and view, we can talk then."

Most of the people trying it on without looking I think will probably be dealers or people that think they are - just 'cos they might have bought or sold one or two in the past...
I wont talk about a price until someone's seen it. You never know, that little addendum above might at least filter some of the plonkers out...
