Re-Map .. the DIY Route
Well, I have been a doubter .... not now!
Last night my mate, Billy, and I decided to have a play about with the map on the ECU ... he's a bit of a whizz when it comes to software stuff ... and I'm one of the countries best Engineers - so, what could go wrong?
Answer - nothing ... it went really smoothly.
I wired up a lead, bloody simple lead to make too - I hardwired the connections to the port - the Laptop connection was, of course, simple.
Billy had a freeware re-mapping software tool and some generic maps (just the same as any mapper) .... we loaded it all up with the laptop and went for a drive.
Billy had the laptop (on his lap, obviously) as I drove the car through my usual daily routes. As I did this he loaded up the generic map options one by one ...... some were awful, of course, and some showed hardly any difference.
But a couple were blinding .... holy cow .... the power and pull was amazing.
I know what you are saying, what about DET? That's OK cause Billy had a set of headphones connected to the laptop listening for any trouble in that department - nothing we couldn't retard to secure a smooth firing. I think the mappers like to call them something mystical like 'CANS' - Billy thinks that's really funny ....
I have connected up a CockLink just to be doubly sure that I look extra kool .....
Sceptic as I am, I didn't really expect too much ... but we went to Billy's mates house (Mikey) who had some rolling road set-up in his garage (he built it himself from old pallets and oil drums) - we popped the old girl on it and WOW!! what can I say? Mikey was drawing the graph behind the screen as I took her up over the 3000 RPM she normally sees - to the mind bendingly hieghts of around 4500RPM!!
What Mikey drew was a graph showing that I now have a 750 BHP monster on my hands - I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen Mikey draw the graph myself! I am so impressed.
Mikey had a neighbour who is into fuel delivery systems and he had a fuel useage device which he placed between the fuel pump and the regulator - this showed that I can expect to achieve over 60 mpg ....... I have heard wild claims for re-maps before and disregarded them - but this, well, it shows how blinkered I have been!
So, there we have it - 750BHP and 60+mpg ...... I have this moment written to the worlds Car Makers and offered my services - I'm going to be a very, very, rich man!!
I'm shocked that they haven't discovered these things before - but, Hey-Ho ... their loss my gain!!
Long live the RE-MAP!!!!!

As soon as I read the above I thought "this is obviously a joke", but it is nice to see that Pete does not take himself too seriously.
After all, nobody else on here does.
And by the way Pete it should be country's and not countries.

You bog-eyed fool, you got 75 bhp at the wheels.... about right for a tired classic that's never been used properly.

Glad to hear that you have a rolling road made from oil drums, my wife has a smaller portable one made from diet coke cans that she keeps in the boot of her car just in case.
Nice post ;-)

It's well known that these cars need something more substantial than coke cans used on Micra's DIY rolling roads ..... these Impreza's need old Oil drums
