...it's in the middle on the back of the roof and seemingly fixed in being extended.

I want to put a cover on my car. What should I do? Can I just get rid of it?

On a side note, is car going to be outside? If so be careful with it as you can kill the paint if it's on for too long. Water can actually make it's way into the paint (I've seen this first hand) Get the best breathable cover you can.
