Default Pops and Bangs on standard exhaust?

Couple of weeks ago whilst driving down the A406 in Wembley I was behind a couple of Classics.
They looked quite standard, but exhaust was popping and banging like a WRC car.

Sounded very sweet, and made me wonder how to get this sound.
Have done a search on here and found that it is achieve through mapping it on overun.

Can someone tell me (sorry if this sounds stupid) but can you choose how loud and frequent the pops and bangs are at the time of mapping?

Also, is this bad for the engine?

Finally, can I get the pops and bangs on a standard exhaust with a remap, or will I need to change the backbox, centre section and downpipe to get the sound?

I have a uk turbo MY00, It has a 3" full decat exhuast with a hks ssqv dump valve, My car pops and bangs like crazy

You dont need to buy a simtek ecu to get pops and bangs
But i will say if you got lots of money then go for it, cus anti-lag sounds awesome

std ecu can do this pretty easily once mapped - it is not the best thing for the sensors in the exhaust but a little doesnt hurt much

am i right in thinking that the overfueling is what causes the pops and bangs?

Yes mate overfuelling is what causes the pops and bangs,my old 99 wagon after full decat and straight through system & vta dump valve would pop and bang with ease, however this may lead to your lambda sensor failing, and becausethe lambda uses such a low voltage you wont see a cel until you do a master reset.

possible by just getting decatted exhaust as subaru's tend to run rich. If you got remapped for fuel on over-run or for anti-lag with the standard exhaust you would begger the cat pretty quickly (*ahem*).
