Default Advice, Next car a scooby

Alright guys / girls Im hoping to trade in the car in the next couple of months and get a 05/06 STi. There is no other car out there i like as much as Imprezas. I have owned a classic shape WRX, i loved it, best car i have ever had. Unfortunately i had to get rid due to costs, New clutch and gearbox fixed. Im currently driving an Focus ST. I've had it 2 years and still liking it.

Before i get one i'd like some advice about them first. Should i forget about the WRX and get the STI, Whats the difference between them? Is the STI 300 or 330 BHP?

I do all my own services, How often does it need oil change? I usually change every 6 months anyway. I recon the costs would be about the same as the ST, Front break pads pads £70, tyres £100. Im £60-£80 a week petrol.

I got an insurance quote from greenlight who I'm with now for £900. Not sure if i could get it any cheaper, Im 28, 10 years nc. Im £500 for the ST.

Is there any faults or common problems with them, The ST is full of them.
Last question sorry, How high a millage sti would you buy?

Thanks tyrone.

Maintain them well and they are reliable cars.

Insurance- surely you can get cheaper than that, I'm 22 with 3 years NCB and paying only a tiny bit more than that on my 02 STi. Do be warned, fuel consumption is bad but you already knew that.

A WRX is not really an upgrade over an FST, so I'd not bother. Definately go for the STi with the better brakes, gearbox and power. Look for one with the PPP pack- 300 ponies straight out the box and some serious all-weather performance.

On a side note, driven a Focus ST3, thought it was a very pleasant car and very refined but the scooby is way more connected and involving (albeit without those lovely toys!)

Where in the UK are you based? If you want to have a poke around on and your local feel free to take a peek at mine.

Obviously I'd love it to sell but it's an open offer to view without any kind of commitment or expectation to buy. http://pistonheads.com/sales/1633707.htm

Having previously owned a 2003 STI and now the 2006 STI they drive totally different the 2.0 and 2.5 engines.

One with the PPP pack is 320ps out the box.

As for further things they're 3-4 year old cars just make sure you do all the usual checks and personally I'd go for something with FSH thats visibly been well maintained. I think from looking through the forum there isn't anything really they're 'prone' to having issues with that you'd instantly look out for other than unfortunately at some point the rear struts will start to knock.

This won't cause any issue with performance just more of an annoyance.

This is the .pdf file from Prodrive on the PPP packs about the power http://www.prodrive.com/up/06MY%20STi%20PPP.pdf

Hope this helps and all the best with your search!
