Default "I've put diesel in your car...."

I've just had the worst telephone call you could wish for (on car related non death issues). She's took it on a long trip and has just tried to force Shell V-Power Diesel in to it (despite the hose not fitting). What makes it worse is that there were two of them (females - her sister, both old enough to know better) and yet they still did not spot the deliberate mistake. Temper still in tact, just.

AA called and fuel system needs emptying and treating. ****. There was still 1/2 tank of the good stuff in there so it's hopefully OK.

Thankfully for you it is usually when petrol is put in a diesel car the problems occur as the seals in the diesel system fail. Your car might be a bit smoky for a while if she tried to start the car and got diesel into the fuel lines.

AA's coming out in the am. Luckily she only drove for 3 or 4 miles. She reckons she put in about 8 quids worth before giving up, as the hose did not fit. I can barely bring myself to type those last 5 words in the last sentence. She's my wife and I love her dearly, but the fuc%ing hose did not fit! If the hose don't fit it doesn't belong (filthy joke in there somewhere).

The AA feul guys reckon it'll be fine. Empty the tank and brim up on V-Power. I had images of new engine and all the sh%t that entails.

She was shi&&ing herself when she rang me. The immortal line, "What colour should the hose have been? Mine was black." (another sick joke there too, my apologies) - I love my cars and I have never owned a car for so long as this one (bar a classic hill climb MG Midget). If she'd fecked it I think she may have considered resignation before the innevitable sacking.

mate wouldnt worry about it tbh,, done it in my cossie years ago..... was a full tank of bp ultimate and i drained it all out at the petrol station,,, refilled with Vpower and drove home,, then i drained proper and all was fine

petrol in diesel is bad though as diesel lubricates the pumps,,,,, and the new HP diesels its REAL bad and kills them almost instantly,,, which aint cheep as ive just supplyed one for a mondeo at work pmsl

you will be fine though,,,,, pump the petrol through the return into a bottle to clean the lines and drain the tank,, you will be mint

be warned the AA will just tow to a garage who will charge 300 for the job, i never made it out the petrol station hence i could just pump it through and refill to get home

Piece of **** to sort out. If they charge you more than an hours labour, query the bill!!

Drain the tank, and then fill it with V power. Start car and drive away.

8 quid is nowt and will probably be mixed with the good stuff so not a problem in the slightest.

The car will probably smoke for a little while but once its all out of the system you'll notice how much smoother it is.

Should be less than £100 to fix but don't tell her that. Make her feel bad and make her do some making up to you

a garage will want to change the fuel filter too and will flush the tank also,,, garages dont like doing half jobs and doing em twice,,, so tend to charge for a proper job once with no come backs

W H Smith sell diy divorce kits. I used one of these and my total expenses inc court fees was £237 (don't ask about the settlement), possibly cheaper than the repairs.

Noticed the banner at the top of this thread is for red diesel.

Anyway's - clean tank out yourself as above, BUT, spend money on mods on your car - your other half will now be expecting you to spend @£300 on the car - just tell her it was all to do with the fuel problem.

(This may be a bit hard to explain if you purchase a new rear spoiler - but I'm sure an air filter, walbro fuel pump, etc are in with a chance).

At todays prices £8 is only about 6.5 liters of fuel, if it were me ant the car was not highly modified I would just brim the tank with the good stuff and drive it off boost till the light comes on

My point exactly.
Drain and refill. There is absolutely no need for a garage to charge silly money to sort this.

It's worse the other way when you put unleaded in a diesel. I've done it myself. Even drove the bugger home. Was a 1 year old BMW120D M Sport. I drained the tank put to 5 litre cans of diesel in, cranked it until it fired up drove it to the petrol station and then brimmed it with diesel never had any other issue.

I hate seeing garages pulling peoples pants down. As for £3500 to put right they've proper had you over there mate. Again a drain and refill would have no doubt sorted it.
