Gravel Express

A "Gravel Express" is a 5-door WRX with a taller ride height and no alloys usually:
I don't know a lot about them but I guess they were the "prototype" Forester.
Not my cup of tea but I'm sure some people love them....
Art (the guy I bought my car from) has this one in stock - see

Spotted an unusual scoob in Glasgow yesterday afternoon. It was an Impreza wagon,P reg., red and grey 2-tone,back box and clearly some sort of import. It was logo'd as a 'Gravel Express' and looked like a 4WD off-roader,with external wheel cover, bull bars etc.
Was that you? Can anyone shed any light on what this strange scooby is,where it originates and it's intended function -or is someone just having a laugh?

It is readily available in Japan and some are starting to come over here. It is a more rugged (farming) version of the WRX, longer suspension travel and the like. No idea of engine power but would have thought it is the same as the early WRX wagons ie 220ps.

I looked at the Gravel Express a couple of years ago as they are cheaper than standard WRX imports. They dont have sports seats, they have softer suspension and higher ground clearance - and accordingly handle terribly ! The power is about the same as Uk cars (less than WRXs) so the salesamn told me. Not sure on exact truth though.
