Default Another Tyre Question

Hi,

I have a 06 Hawkeye WRX STI with PPP. When I bought it it had TOYOs on and I hate them. I know everyone has there preference, but is there a tyre that's considered the best for all year round everyday driving?

Also, what were the factory fit tyres for my car, was it Bridgestone Potenza RE050? If so is there any other codes I need to know? When I had my blob eye with the bridgestones (RE040's I think) everytime I asked for these the tyre dealer asked what tread pattern they were. I didn't know what this was but apparantly it was a longish code (about 10 digits, something like EBZ and some numbers).

Cheers, Toby

How long do they tend to last in terms of miles?

With every scoob I've had I have changed to Goodyear F1 GSD3s ..Fantastic tyres ,have been replaced but some places still list them .. the equivalent ( Goodyear Excellence Assymetric I think ) seems to get excellent reviews..in the dry and wet.. Go for these if you can , you wont regret it
I found RE040s I had on an STi absolutely terrible! Tramlining everywhere! NEVER again..
Found RE050s that came on previous WRX great in wet and dry, not as good in the wet as the Goodyear GSD3s tho ..not sure if they're on STis either.

Thanks for the advice. Out of interest, which of the Bridgestones for the STi was/is it that looks like a semi slick?

Yep, those are what my '07 STi has on, Bridgestone Potenza RE070 semi-racing tyres, very good grip in the dry, not overly impressed in the wet, but really bad for tramlining

RE070 were standard fit on the car, but I hated them - Good Year F1 Assymetricals now and love them (and thats having done 94,000 miles in total on them), but the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta get rave reviews although I've never tried them.

As a great all round tyre - the RE070 were only any good in the dry - the F1A or VUS will be hard to beat

RE070's all the way. If I could fit them on my new car I would
They shouldn't give you any real problems in the wet, although they don't particularly like standing water. The thing to watch out for is the cold, anything below about 8 degrees and they just don't work. Suppose that could be problematic on a year round daily driver. You could always run some winter tyres during the colder months
As for tramlining, I found it to only be an issue when the tyres are approaching the end of there life.

If you don't like that idea then I'd give the Vredestien's a go. Know a couple of people who've run them with great results.

Thanks for the reply. None of my local dealers know what the Sessanta's are And the RE070's are quite a bit more expensive, and with having to change all 4 tyres, the RE050's suit my budget better. For day to day driving am I really going to notice much difference between the RE050's and RE070's?

but is there a tyre that's considered the best for all year round everyday driving?
No such thing IMO, because you're really much better off driving with winter tyres from November to March in this country. Stick them on a cheap(ish) spare set of the narrowest rims that'll fit over your brake calipers, and switch to your main rims come April. For summer tyres you'd struggle to do better than Conti Sport Contact 3's, according to all the back-to-back tests I've read in German and Swiss car mags. Bridgestones rated very close, or for a budget choice Hankook Evo V12's scored almost as high, only let down by slightly worse aquaplaning resistance.

I had the RE070's on my 05 STi and really liked them. i would have stayed with them but my budget at the time forced me to get the TOYO T1R's which are also good in my opinion and seem to be lasting well.
