I remember paying £1k ish for a recon box a couple of years ago, that was a fitted price at Xtreme scoobies, but they are not longer trading afaik.

Depending on how confident you feel you should be able to get a box off of Ebay or a jap breakers for less than £300 and fit it yourself.

I bought a recon ty754 box and diff, the box had a leak and the diff broke straight away...... I guess just be prepared for extra costs when buying used, I payed £500 for the diff and box so by the time I'd got it fitted and then repaired I could have got Dave at API to build me a good strong one.....
Also DO NOT buy one from Ideal engines, it took me alot of aggression to actually get the goods from these jokers and it was gash when it arrived.

Good luck

just so angry about it been looking for a P1 box as the rear diff is P1 so the ratio is different to all others so in two minds what box to go for as if i get a different box i will need to change the rear diff as the ratio is different

I think you have been unlucky at that power to kill the P1 gearbox, but I understand the once bitten twice shy ethos.

If you are short of cash you have limited options. Best look for the lowest milage 5 speed box of a late classic/bugeye you can find and hope for the best.

If you have more cash available and want to keep the car you could go 6 speed ot have the gearbox rebuilt with stronger internals.

I think you have been unlucky ... in more ways than one it would seem. As someone else said chin up mate.

I always thought the newage gearboxes were stronger than the Classic variety......I ran my Bug 2002 WRX with OEM gearbox at 325 + BHP / 300 torque and it wasn't untill I went to methanol injection and 50 odd more BHP that it blew.

How about looking for a newage WRX setup that someone has swapped for a six speed? My old five speed was swapped with API

Hi mate, as you are local if you need someone who knows what they are doing to remove and refit the box and possibly help sourcing a replacement I can highly recommend Adam at Autotecnica in Buxton, he does a fantastic job at very reasonable prices.
Hope this helps

My classic was running about 300bhp and I had no probs with the gearbox The engine let go last summer

I've gone for a 2.5 conversion, and the car comes back next week, when afaik, the gearbox and diff off the 5 speed will be mine to sell. UK car, 1998, done 84,000 miles.
The only thing missing is the old Subaru gearknob

Stu, what sort of mileage/power did the P1 have that ran the gearbox in the first place? It also depends on how the gearbox was treated, if it did 80k hard miles then sooner or later it was going to go pop so one of the reasons to rebuild the likes of a gearbox (even though your standard box would have been strong enough ) for the power your running.

As Tony says, do you knwo how it's been treated?

Much to my kids' annoyance when they were younger, I refused to launch mine at every opportunity. In the 12 years I've owned it, it's probably been powered away from a standstill less than half a dozen times

not sure how the box was treated before hand all I know is it was replaced at ScoobyClinic and Ross who had the car from new never launched as far as I am awear and I have to much respect for the internals to do any launches, I was told it was from a very low mileage p1, but what I have done is get a Uk2000 box and taken them both into a gearbox specilist to rebuild one good one , so hopefully it should be ok just now worried as after a converstation with dave at API he advises me that the P1 rear diff's arnt to good and are welded shut and apparently the LSD cracks and locks up so now I am going to be so worried when driving her
