I painted over the welds on my stainless steel center pipe and backbox around a year ago with Hammerite or Wickes equivalent, and it's been fine. I used hammered silver to blend in, as it was mostly for rust prevention.
Caliper paint isn't specially heat-resistant BTW, it's just designed to run and dry very smooth, so you can get a good finish without spraying.

If you decide to paint it black then i suggest you use something like 'pot black' paint
Made by Graingers i believe, most cars parts places will sell it. You paint it on and the heat cures it. It goes on real smooth if the surface is properly prepped and lasts for ages. dies to a smooth satin finish, looks more like it has been sprayed on.
Been using it for 30 years on bikes and sometimes cars

I have thought about using the high temp paint sold in Halfords to tidy up my rusty back box, i think the paint is designed for BBQ's and stoves so should be fine temp wise. has anyone used it before??

give me to the end of the weekend and i will spray my exhaust black for you. it almost is now but with it being black it may match my matt black car better.
come to think about it. let me get my engine back in and the car on the floor and then we will go from there

Good call, i have successfully used it on exhaust pipes on many bikes, often enduro biks so plentry of mud, water and abuse and it just lasts and looks good. Do do the prep and stick to the timescales for drying (24 hours) prior to curing with a 30 min run.
Hvae painted manifolds on assorted Austin Healey's and my Mk2 RS2000 and it looked great and lasted there too!

I painted the back box on my Saph, didn't last long tho, used Hammerite smooth black but bodged it on & didn't prep it at all. Once the ALS was switched on it fell off.
Prep it & it should be fine For the back box I'm talking about.
