Prolly best to px with the 5k and get a newer STI, then keep that for a few years and keep pouring money at it untill your satisfied with the performance (i.e. bankrupt)

totally depends if you want a new car or not lol...i have a v3 sti with full exhaust inc headers and up-pipe, induction kit, walbro fuel pump,740cc injectors, front mount intercooler, vf35 turbo and few other bits...not mapped up yet and i should see around 330ish bhp as iv been told
5grand is alot of money to play around with..
i would sell my v3 if i had 5grand to play with and if i had'nt done all the mods as its costing me around £8k and not even ready yet
you can pick a clean type r thats already had money spent on for around £8k am i right??

You could pick up my sorted 98 STI too and have change for a new turbo

Problem with the classics is its somewhat limited to 330bhp, unless you want to eat that whole budget in one go getting a forged build. And even then your gonna need antoher few k for a decent gearbox...

330bhp classic on coilies with AP's makes for one heck of a rapid classic tho!

sell it and put the money towards a car that has had the money thrown at it. just my thoughts. 5k wont last long when modding a standard car,

uprated brakes £1k fitted for something like K-Sports
suspension - £1k - bc coil overs fitted
remap £1K - simtec
defis to see what's going on £500
leaves £1.5'sih to spend on fmic, decat system and uprated clutch and flywheel.

then hope it does not kill the engine or the box, if you have money to burn or don't mind throwing away as you will never get a return come time to sell then go a head but if it were me i would sell yours and put the cash in and by either a well spec'd classic or a newage sti.

best of luck

As above, but with a pre-99 classic, money needs to be spent first, if you haven't already done it, on bigger/better brakes, suspension mods, and bigger wheels to accomodate the brakes.

Mine was running around 300bhp but destroyed it's bottom end last August due to heatsoak.
Getting it back soon though...........

yh you would have to pu the whole 5k in for a rebuild bigger turbo remap and all that to get decent power...not forgetting the gearbox lol as you mentioned...found a link for you that might be useful to make a decision on whether to spend 5grand or buy 1 with over 20grand spent lol

thanks all yeh i think the best way is to get 1 already done. Mine has had alot done to it already when i got it think its runnin over 320bhp paid £4700 for it. Its just the pain of selling it but still worth £4000. So hopefully have £9000 to play with i seen a nice p1 at wrc sales might go for that

Budget 2k for coilovers, suspension - drop links, etc and brake upgrades, the rest on the engine/ecu/transmission for a fast and sorted car.

I'm afraid I wouldn't dream of throwing 5K at a car that old! As others have said, I would sell yours private to maximise cash and add the 5K to the total and buy a newer STI (with work already completed) if extra power/handling is your priority.

Who told you the engine is bullet proof?
Stick to basic mods, forget the nos, no need for it (well unless you want big bills for replacement engine parts )
You have to treat these engines with a little respect, they are pretty old now, not bullet proof, especially if modified incorrectly and not mapped so I would be looking at brakes/suspension and driver training tbh.

Sell your car and put the £5,000 to it: buy a New Age STI.

If you sell your car and have a £9k budget I'd look for a 2.0l Jap Blob STi twin scroll that has been de-catted and re-mapped

every on here is saying sell it get a new age on but it depends on what you like i spent the dollar on my wrx 98 becuase the classic shape is in my opion the best shape and if you want a to do it right just take it one step at a time ive foreged my engine then turn it up to 350 which was done over a year peroid, then i went for a six speed gear box and i am now sat at 390 bhp and in have all the mods i need, some were second hand some were new and now i thinking of taking to 440bhp but if you like the new age scooby which is a nice motor then trade up and tune it up but there is an old saying better the devil you know : >

Worst part about buying a used tuned motor is that you never know how the car was driven and there's a good chance that it might have been abused and will not last long in your hands. However, pouring that money into tuning the motor yourself doesnt seem so smart either..

It is quite sickening how many people are selling cars that had tens of 000's poored into them and are now selling for less than half of what was invested ( if that !! ), really makes me wish i never got involved with this bs and just bought a proper car instead, im pretty sure i wouldnt be selling a 25,000 pounds car for 8k without any viewings after only 2 years of ownership and less than 10k miles driven ... not unless i wraped it around a tree...

yeah you have a point tunning your car is not somthing you should do with your eyes closed but if thats what your into and then do it as you can at least look back in life as say you have done it and experince the highs and low of it all or you could be one of these people who drive around in a normal boring car all your life and never now the joys of a raw piece of power which you have created and not some run of the mill motor i mean ive spent about 12 grand or so now and there out nothing out there what can touch this for that money aprt from over tuned up jap machines

there is some truth to that and i did enjoy driving my 500 bhp + car 100% of the time, there wasnt a single day when it didnt put a smile on my face and i guess you have to pay for all good things in life huh, it just sucks that i had to pay so much...

It's all well and good spendng money and building a car to how you want it as long as you can look at it as a hobby as you will be doing it for enjoyment not making money. If I were you I would work out if you want to by a highly modded classic for 8-9k or buy a newage sti albeit a 01/02 sti with a few choice mods which will leave a couple of grand left over or spend the lot on a 03/04 sti and then over time tweak that one as and when funds allow, not sure but you may get an 05 sti for 9k nowadays.

Before you decide I would strongly recommend driving a newage sti as they are a completly different driving experiance in my opinion compared to a classic also due to the extra weight inhave heard/read which might be myth but you will need about 50bhp n lb to make a newage feel similar to the classic. So driving them as you may not like the feel of a newage. You will then know which one you want to go for a classic or the newage

best of luck
