You cant basically, its not legal, but you can reduce the size of your front plate as long as you keep the correct lettering sizes and spaces

Nope its not legal as shown above, there is no plate mounting for it, there are on the standard unmodified bumpers, hence you can be pulled by the police and given a 60 quid fine for it.
Reduce the size of the plate, saying that, I have no issues with the standard size plate on my V5 STI with a FMIC (mine is also meshed to stop stone damage )

Its not legal as the plate isnt legal, the mounting on subaru's is for a rectangluar (as per normal cars), the only reason any car can have a square plate is if the mounting can only fit a square plate (evo's and nissan GTI-R's for instance).
Thats why its not legal (there is a wonderful document stating all these things, think you have a very generous mot tester )
Have a read http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/uksi_20010561_en.pdf

i accept you reasoning, but does that apply to imports?, if so 70% of the scoobys out they are running ilegal plates, as this are supplied by motorfactors everwhere, dont use generious mot inspector as if anything wrong (even the smallest of things)i wont it to fail, maybe like everyone else they dont know neither.

Yup applies to imports imported from 2001.
But it also states that if the cars standard fittings accommodate the UK number plates, those are what have to be fitted.

dont wont to drag this out, but you can still have smaller plate on import (restricts air flow lol),as better get mine checked from m8 who trains police on matters like this to see where i stand, will post outcome as if he dosent know then no one will .

Off the DVLA site.

Display of Vehicle Registration Marks on Imported Vehicles (which have arestricted space for a standard sized number plate)Certain imported vehicles may be permitted to display number plates with smaller characters if:
The vehicle does not have European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval
AND
The vehicle's construction/design cannot accomodate standard size number platesSpecifications for smaller sized plates (for certain imported vehicles)

Character Height
64mm
Character Width
44mm
Character Stroke
10mm
Space between characters
10mm

Mines has square plates (front and rear) and only had 2 mots in this country since imported. At 2 different stations and with no problems with either.

Below i`ve attatched a copy from the DVLA why not print it out and keep it in the car
