Question 10 year old Impreza Turbo Wagon - or .....

6 month old Audi S3 Quattro?

You may think the choice was simple ... I can officially state that it is not as clear cut as you may imagine - because I've just driven both, back to back!!

I could have closed my eyes in the Audi and I would not know if I was driving my car - or a £32,000 alternative!

Shocked

Yes, the Audi is newer, but it drove the same!! It had one owner - same as mine, it delivered fantastically - same as mine.

But, this particular one had heated seats (which was a nice touch for £32k)

Staggered, but pleased that I chose the absolute right car 10 years ago and it would still keep the S3 Quattro behind it! Brilliant, both cars - brilliant!

Bacck in Dec 1999 I drove a s/h MY99 S3 and a MY99 demo scoob uk turbo, the S3 was nice but the scoob had the edge, more feedback, better steering and brakes oh and felt faster - got the scoob, hardly anything in it on price just i felt it was more moi!

And not the Motorway variety of number. Oh the choices. If only i had the money for the car i saw pull up at supermarket today. Jammy bugger in his Bentley. Lovely motor.

My pal Miles got a A3 TDi Quattro but sadly had the 18" wheels/tyres added, apart from the ride it's a superb package.

Knowing just how much you "enjoy" doing them, a re-map can take it to a whole new level of performance too !

Good luck with the car hunting.

Now if you had had your wagon mapped Pete you would have an even more clear cut reason to keep the scoob

I am avoiding making comment about your eye sight and closing yours eyes whilst driving... ho damn too late

wasn't me that offered a free remap, I value my services a bit more than that and would want paying for having to put up with being in the car for a couple of hours with you, in fact may have cost you more.. lol

I drove my old Impreza a few weeks back for the first time in a year after driving my Golf R32 everyday. I was quickly reminded why I sold it: Jesus christ, I totally forgot how laggy they are and how little torque they have sub 3000rpm. This is a TD04 too.

Steering was numb to ANY feedback (OK R32 isn't much better, but at least its not quite so over-assisted). UK classic spec gear ratios just seemed too far spaced apart, and I was reminded how clunky the gearshift was (smooth, tight and mechnically reassuring, but somewhat like a Land Rover Defender gearbox; a little antiquated when going down the gears at low speeds).

Then there was the road noise, urrrgh.

To cap it off I overheated the brakes which then faded quite badly after the third roundabout on the bypass; I'm yet to overheat the R32 brakes when driving in anger (which is not often, but I have my moments - see below).

Plus points; Comfy seats and once on boost it still goes like the clappers. A MY97 WRX RA (or so it said on the badge) started pratting about with us, and I was given strict orders by the scoob's current owner to boot it. The WRX RA couldn't get away! Despite RAs allegedly being more powerful, lighter and has shorter gear ratios to a UK MY97, plus it has to run on super unleaded. No matter how hard it tried, it couldn't pull away! The UK MY97 scoob still runs on 95RON fuel too, which is what I've always ran it on and it has done so for the past thirteen years without fault. V-Power, my ****.

So thats another plus point; it'll run on 95RON (cheaper fuel), its cheaper to tax, and with the exception of the brakes needing attention, its pretty damn reliable. And its faster than a R32 (well, it is 400kg lighter afterall). No trim rattles either. Admittedly the Golf's reliability and associated VW warranty service isn't anywhere near as good as Subaru's "approved" used car warranty. Something that wouldn't have been an issue if the dealerships were a little more accomodating.

MY97 Impreza: 6 out of 10 stars; R32 gets 7 stars out of 10. Despite the nostalgia, I'm still glad I got rid of it.

Want to buy it Pete? Its only done 55,000miles so it'd make sense to swap to a lower mile version of the same car.
