What about world rally X = cross?
Or it could just be like Subaru Impreza WRX = WR with electric windows and metallic paint, like the old ford sierra GL/|GLX's

Believe it is for World Rally Cross, with the X representing cross, same kind of thing as with BMX, which I think stands for Bicycle Motor Cross.

Dream Weaver,
You seem very sure about this, whereabouts did you find the definitive answer?

WRX - World Rally Cross ( as already confirmed )
I think this comes from...
WRC - World Rally Car. The all singin, all dancin super-dee-duper car that it is.
WRX - World Rally Cross. Kind of a "cross" between the WRC and the bog-standard Impreza.
