The End
Mixed feelings ....
Just ordered my new car - a Civic Type S GT Diesel ....
I so wanted a new Subaru Impreza, I desperately wanted one ... but the dog wouldn't fit in the HatchBack (I considered all manner of folding seat arrangements), the tacky plastics (each time you touch the heater controls you are reminded of a 1970's Amstrad Hi-Fi ... I know, I owned one!!) and the painful costs to own (£435 Road Tax each and every year ... imagine how that would feel when the car is worth £5000 - at just 5 years old) - just ruled it out.
The world has moved on, the Impreza hasn't - and I'm truly gutted about that
So, after 10 years of absolutely fantastic driving - never did I regret 1 mile in my old girl - it's over

Sorry to hear that Pete, but as you have said the Impreza is not practical for your needs so you chose another marque.
There is no doubt that Honda's are very well built and the running costs will be considerably less than the Impreza hatchback.
I have no doubt you will still be on here as let's face it you are a legend and besides that the Civic forum banned you.
Good luck with the new car.
ps Did you sell the wagon or did you decide to keep it?

Thanks both ...
Didn't exchange the old girl ..... I'll probably advertise her soon - I'll be really gutted to see her drive out of sight.
I have sold most of my old cars to people I know, they know how I am with my cars, I'll pop a For Sale sign in her at work - may park it outside the apprentice school
Sadly, it's value is now pocket money .... it was over £22,000 in May 2000!! In truth I haven't regretted any penny spent on her
I guess it's value can only increase now? Classic, vintage, UK one owner rally legend!

I did consider keeping it, really I did ...... and if I can't sell it I may have to!!! Pop it in the garage with the MX5? Maybe - but, in reality it needs to be gone.
And I cannot advertise it here .... I do not have the required posting rights ....

The Test Drives I had ....
WRX STi - mind blowing, fast, but the world has moved on.
WRX-S - Excellent, value for money, but £435 a year Road Tax (to be increased hugely each budget) ... look to when you have a 5 year old Impreza, the Road Tax then will be £800?, the car value will be £5000? - even if you can sell .... as noone will want it. I can't do it.
Mazda 3 mps - wild, wild, wild ..... loaded with kit and 260BHP through the front wheels - the nearest thing to death you can drive! And amazingly only band K Road Tax!
Astra SRi 1.6T - lovelly car to look at in white, not bad to drive - but no reall 'urge' and £21k is stupid!
Insignia 2.0T - well equipped, pulls brilliantly, marketing mans 'sport' button! £26k is madness!
Mazda6 Sport 2500 petrol - superbly appointed, in white it looks amazing, IS250 Lexus lookalike .... no real 'pull' (I clearly miss the Turbo!).
VW Golf 1.4 GT ... the most surprising car tested, amazing engine with a Turbo and Supercharger - but, good god, isn't it so German in its blandness?
Audi S3 Quattro ... the nearest thing to my Classic Wagon, brilliant - just brilliant - but, at £32,000????
Skoda Octavia vRS ... looks like a Taxi, disappointing drive, couldn't get comfortable cheap new - highly thought of, but not by me.
Ford Focus ST3 ... best seats I have ever experienced, leather heated Recaros - but, no real 'pull' despite a volvo T5 engine!!??
Honda Civic Type R ... who the hell wants to drive like that all the time? Certainly no Engineer would be happy thrashing an engine in such a manner. Disappointed.
Honda Civic Type S GT 1.8 vvt petrol ... amazing deals on the petrol versions - because they are pants!
Honda Civic Type S GT 2.2 Diesel ... incredible, I only took it out to see what the seats were like and a diesel was on hand! I didn't want to take it back - and a diesel!!! Between 2000 and 4500 it pulls like a steam train - this is when I realised I am hooked on Turbo power and high Torque figures ..... this delivers 340 Nm of Torque @ 2000 RPM (the WRX delivers 320 Nm at 2800 RPM). It's got more pulling power than the Impreza WRX yet delivers 55mpg and costs £110 in Road Tax!
So I bought the latter ..... at least I didn't go German!!
I may have test driven more ... but they were very forgettable, obviously.

I have to disagree here. My st3 was very torquey, better then my STI, pulled from 1300 revs and the power delivery was smooth and constant. The engine sounded great with a nice 5 pot burble. I was so disappointed with the sound of my sti when i got i had to put a cat back system on it and the focus still sounds better. The sti is quicker but there are still things about the focus I preferd. Handling of the focus felt twitchy. The back never went but it didn't inspire confidence!

What does it red line at? I thought you didn't thrash your cars due to mechanical sympathy!

I agree the ST has a fantastic soundtrack ..... the new scoobies lack that
The Civic redlines at 4500 RPM - I think? Hardly thrashing it .... unlike tha manic CTR at, what? 8500 RPM??

The logic is there for all to see really.
I projected myself forward 5 years and tried to imagine the world we would be living in then - what I saw was this:-
Road Tax for the Band M cars at £800. (Impreza WRX's)
Petrol and diesel at £4 a litre. (Civic 55 mpg - WRX's 25 mpg)
Petrol cars shunned - this is happening right now at the dealers, they are struggling to sell new petrols. (Civic still worth something - WRX's not wanted)
Road Tax for the Band E cars at £200. (Civic Diesel)
Subaru UK will it still be here? parts prices horrendous and parts really hard to come by, only specialists left to service/repair.
Honda Dealerships in every town, parts can be bought anywhere (as the Civic is pretty numerous).
Silly little things like, Haynes Manual for Civic .... none for the Impreza.
I know you only live once - which is why I have bought a Civic Type S diesel with 340 Nm of torque ....... living and enjoying driving without the pain of the Impreza running costs.

The current Civic has lowered the average age of the Civic buyer from 61 to 41 I understand .....
I was open to any car .... I had basic needs, it had to go well (Civic does), had to look good (Civic does in a marmite way), it had to carry a big dog (Civic does with ease), it had to be able to take a TowBar (Civic does - but not the Type R's).
It really is a good car.
