There's a general guide for prices on Subaru4You's website here http://www.subaru4you.co.uk/service.htm
They ain't cheap
My dealer is a bit cheaper than those mentioned on the Subaru4You dealer price, but it is only a guide. Remember it needs a minor service every other 6 months / 7500 miles.
I'm doing it whilst I can afford it and enjoying every minute

From new you have an initial service at 1000 miles, then the first proper service is at 6 months / 7500 miles. This is a minor service. Your main services occur at 15000 mile intervals / every 12 months from the cars birth.
So basically, every 6 months you get stung for at least 100 quid
The main services (on the Subaru4You site) are the multiples of 15000 miles. There is a minor one in between each of these.
Remember that tyres will probably set you back 400 odd quid for 16" ones, more for 17s and also depends on brand. That's for a complete set. Brakes aren't cheap and it probably isn't worth getting cheap ones anyway given that you will actually want to stop
Insurance can vary but seems on average to be about a grand (given that some people are lucky and get to pay about 4-500 quid...whereas some are unlucky and get to pay 1500-2000 ).
Petrol you are looking at between 15 and 30 mpg depending on how you drive, and the tank holds about 11 gallon (on mine anyway).
There is more info on the FAQ on the SIDC website http://www.sidc.co.uk

I'd class myself as working class. I'm just a bog standard employee (well team leader now) at a standard company. Sit down and work out the finances, both buying and running the car. Depends what other outgoings this person has and how they are purchasing the car.
Someone I think worked out that it cost them about 7k a year in purchasing and running. Just work out the mileage for a start. Take an average of about 22mpg, work out the miles they will do in a year, multiply by cost of petrol. Then add on insurance, figure a set of tyres a year, money put aside for brake discs and pads. Then add the servicing on top.....hang on, why have I got one of these things....oh yeah....divide by the fun factor
They are expensive, but then you aren't buying Micra performance ( a bog standard one before you start talking about rally ones )

All comes down to priorities. If you really want something, then why not get it whilst you can. Just make sure it is affordable with enough money left over to enjoy yourself.
Oh yeah, and mods will be bought so that is more expense, which puts the insurance up too. Occasionally, things go wrong too.....
We're looking at moving house soon. If money gets tight, then I will flog the car. The house is more important to me, and I can always get another Scoob at a later date.

Assuming 10K miles a year I reckon you will be lucky to get a way with less 1000 for servicing and parts (on average*) and this could be a lot more. Insurance you are looking at probably 700 minimum depending on age, area, NCB etc. Fuel at say 25mpg for 10k miles on optimax about another 1300, tax about 160.
Total 1000+700+1300+160 = 2160 and that a minimum I reckon.
*1000 for servicing and parts is probably a bit low . You will get through the best part of a set of tyres and maybe pads and discs in a year but again depends on how hard you drive and what tyres and pads you run. Servicing prices vary but the minor seem to be around 100 and major anything from 150 to 400+
cheers

Very lucky to get 30 mpg, and then there is insurance. About £700 per year at 35 years old maximum no claims bonus in a rural location.....
You have to reckon at 10,000 per year on an annual cost of
Petrol: 1,500
Road Tax: 160
Tyres 250 (assuming they need changing at 20,000)
Dealer Minor Service: 130
Dealer Major Service: 400 (could be more or less)
Insurance: 700
That's £3,140 per year or £261 per month. Grossed up about £4,500. Costs can vary dramatically either way based on things such as weight of right foot, cam belt changes, using a non dealer garage etc. etc. The costs above don't take into account depreciation or finance and it's worth bearing in mind that insurance without a tracker is becoming increasingly difficult to find so you may have to allow for an extra £25 per month for that.
I owned my first one from new so most things were covered under the warranty, but if you are buying second hand take into account that spares aren't the cheapest!
You have to go into ownership with your eyes wide open, but if you do it really is the closest you can get to supercar performance for less than 20K and the best fun ever. And the experience doesn't end with the car. The owners are some of the friendliest there are.

I agree with Dave we a paint a very bad picture but they great cars for 20K new.
Fuel I pay about 75p a litre for optimax (Shell super fuel) and use to pay about 79 for other SUL (super unleaded). Tell you m8 he need to run SUL at least even though UK can run on NUL it will be slightly down on performance.

That should be enough to make him think seriously

If you multiply the number of litres by 0.22 you get the number of gallons.
so 60 litres, is 60x0.22 gallons = 13.2.
so if 1 litre is 0.22 of a gallon, 1 gallon is 4.545454545 litres.
so 1 gallon of petrol is 4.545454545 x price of petrol.
Assuming 75p, 1 gallon is £3.41.
Think those figures are right
So for 10000 miles, assuming 23 mpg, that's 10000/23 gallons of petrol, which is 434.79 gallons, multiplied by 3.41 = a shade under 1500 quid on petrol.

That car you have listed you wont get for 700 a year insurance with all those mods and its a grey import. Well over 1000 for starters. You wont get 30 mpg in that car more like 20mpg. My import I average about 21mpg.
10000/20 = 500 gallons
75p a litre * 4.54 = £3.40 a gallon
500 * 3.40 = £1700 for 10000 miles
10000/20 = 500 gallons
75p a litre * 4.54 = £3.40 a gallon
500 * 3.40 = £1700 for 10000 miles
