one absolutely gutted newbie(UPDATE 16/6)
hi all, this was not the way i wanted to introduce myself on here.
Picked up my v plate uk2000 model impreza off a regular user of the forum and have had 2 days of a pure smile on my face as this is my first impreza, but unfortunately today i encountered what i think could be a major problem.
went to a friends house to show him the car, had been out 20 minutes and was stopped at some traffic lights,i launched fairly quickly and went to change from first to second and it felt like i either missed gear,or it didnt want to go from first to second.no grinding, infact i didnt hear any noise what so ever, but seemed to have lost the gears, luckily we were only a couple of hundred yards from his drive, so managed to get it off the road for a further inspection.
now at first we could get some gears (mainly reverse and 3rd) but after a while it was like the linkage didnt wouldnt move, either backwards or forwards, and even side to side didnt feel like it did before, so decided to disconnect the linkage and see if we could move the rod on the gearbox end.
at this point i wasnt very optomistic and this proved me right as when i tried to push or pull the rod that goes into the box, it wouldnt move at all.
so my question is does anybody know what the problem could be? i know the box is going to have to come out, but if someone had an idea on what it could be that would at least point me in the right direction!!
sorry for the essay guys, just absolutely gutted at the minute
cheers Ryan

no worries bigsinky i know what you mean!
its around 300bhp, but the thing is there was no signs of anything wrong, just went from 1st to 2nd (albeit a bit quickly) and that was it.

+1 for knackered 'box!!
My MY99 UK Turbo suffered with the same problem, except I managed to drive 100ish miles from to Barry and it just siezed!! It was popping out of fifth a lot when lifting off on the motorway and I ignored it!! Couldn't even move the linkage so had to bite the bullet and bought a 2nd hand box!!

Hi Ryan,
Try a search on here re gear linkages, seem to remember that this has happened before and it can be just a loose linkage, it also may have a quick shift that has come loose.
also try pumping the clutch pedal a few times then engaging gear, may be low fluid, air in fliud or a knackered master cylinder/seals if pumping the pedal makes a difference.

with 300bhp i am going for fooked box as well. sorry but those boxes are just not meant to take that sort of power and abuse for any length of time. good news is a replacement 5 speed uk box is not too expensive, but then you run the risk of wrecking another 5 speed. i will not rule out a gear linkage or selector fork as you said there was no grinding noise. hope its a simple fix bud.

i take it i should be able to move the lever that goes into the box quiet easily by hand?

Jumping out of fifth on the overrun is the first symptom. If you ignore it the gear will move on the shaft and load the synchro up, which will eventually overheat, and crack the hub, jamming the shift collar on it.
That could have been fixed for the cost of a couple of hours labour had you reacted to it initially. Which isn't a dig at you btw, it's a note to anyone reading this thread in future that sitting back and doing nothing as this sort of problem develops is almost invariably going to lead to a bigger repair bill down the line.
Hurley, not much to add to what the others have said, unfortunately. Sounds like a broken or bent gear selector mechanism. The selector rod will feel quite stiff if you try and manipulate the universal joint the end of the box, but if all things are working, should be movable.. In your case it sounds like the damage is internal so expect it to be very stiff indeed, if not totally stuck.

That's a classic example of the loosening input shaft stake nut problem.

i know ebays not the best place but would this be the sort i should be looking for?(depending on gearbox code diff etc)

A secondhand box from a reputable supplier is likely to be the most predictable and cost-effective way forward, unless you're partial to DIY.

In practice Moley is likely to be on the money. If you're capable of stripping and rebuilding a gearbox yourself then you have nothing to lose from having a look. However if you don't have the time, tools or experience, paying someone else to repair your existing 'box will rapidly get expensive in labour charges alone.

Hello fella, sorry to hear of your issues. I know what it's like to kill a box
Hopefully these links may help you as this is what I did when I had to replace the gearbox...

Have a look here:

Your box code is near the starter on a white sticker. You have to make sure your front and rear dif ratio's are the same. Front diff is inside the box.
Time, erm... took me about 6 hours I reckon. Depends if you have any issues getting the down pipe off and splitting the box from the engine.

If you want garanteed second hand quality then give Roger Clark Motorsport a call, but it does come at a price.
This is the number for RCM if you fancy giving them a call for a quote, etc - 01455828610. The guy I used to speak to there was Simon. He was always very helpful.

right guys, had quite an eventfull week since the box broke.... managed to get it over to Thwaites Developments as they are only 10 miles away and after speaking to Mark, decided that was where i wanted the car to go.
After struggling to find a car capable of towing the car on a trailer, the lad who i usually get to do my alarms etc convieniently told me he had a sprinter with a tow bar, and after what seemed like an age getting it loaded onto the trailer we set of for marks place as he said he would hang on for me to get over there, this was at 8:00pm! so really appreciated him hanging on,although when i got there he did inform me that he would of been there untill 1am working on a rebuild he had promised for saturday!
On arriving at Thwaites Mark instantly downed tools and managed to put the car on the ramp to have a quick look, leaving me to hook the trailer up and make my way home safe in the knowledge that the car will be sorted.
Saturday afternoon came and the phone rang..... and to say i was a bit nervous would be an understatement! but after hearing Mark explain what had happened (second gear had stripped) and what it would take to sort it, (luckily he had a lay shaft and gear for the box so that would keep the cost down) i left him to it.
And then the phone rang again today, its all ready mark wants to keep hold of it over night and do a few miles, although he did say he was 100% happy with it now, i was happy for him to bed the box in for me. so i will be making my way over after work tomorrow to pick it up.
Cant praise Mark highly enough to be honest, from getting it on the ramp as soon as i arrived to ringing me with updates etc, i would happily reccomend him to anybody.

Absolutely bang on mate - genuinely pleased for you. Sounds like Mark is a genuine, genuine chap and it is nice to see such a positive and quick turn around.
You may see a few threads with nothing but slating for specialists on these pages, but theis thread shows the good guys are still out there
Get out there and use the car mate - enjoy ownership
