Default Subaru 2.5sti Hawkeye noises from rear diff when reversing at low speeds

Hello My fellow members,

I have a subaru impreza sti 2.5 hawkeye on a 57plate, i have had it for around 6 months now. can anyone tell me if the following is the norm, when i reverse of my drive etc at low speeds i hear a kind of klunking/knocking noise from the back of the car, it feels as if something is locking or some kind of friction for a second, the car drives buetifully and i have had no probs with it. I have taken it to subaru and they have siad it is the diff and it is perfectly normal, they siad the wr1 and the hawkeye diffs lock up at low speed, i aint to sure.

Can anyone shed any light on this and let me know if they encounter it with there hawkeye.

Cheers Boys.

Take the A-DCCD out of auto and set to the bottom green, then make slow manouvers (back forward and turning), shouldnt hear anything, with the a-dccd it can still be slightly forward and that can wind the diff up, common trait of the a-dccd in auto.

yes the diff is a real bitch in the hawkeye, as said, manual full rear diff setting when reversing

its much better improvement in the hatch

i used to cringe sometimes when doing a 3 point turn and forgeting to swtich the dccd to manual lol

I understand that this is a common trait in all the Wr1's - mine included

Rear Shockers, my old 06 STI used to knock when i reversed up the drive, get someone else to drive it and sit in the back and listen to see if you can tell where its coming from. The service manager at my dealer even pulled the through load flap down amd stuck his head in the boot to try and decide which shock it was.

have the same with mine, before reversing pull the hand brake on by one click so that the handbrake light comes on-this frees the diffs and the knocking will disapear and is easier than playing around with the dccd ****.
cheers

Its just the diff winding up, doesnt do any damage, its what diffs do

Once again the search facility comes up trumps!

I was going to ask this question as my 57 plate STI makes strange noises when reversing too. I'll try changing the settings tomorrow

Technically (but in simple speak) what is happening when the 'clonking' noise occurs and why does changing the setting resolve it?

aye mine does this etc
the original owner warned me about it and i thought id brought a car with a fecked diff heh
but as per his word its all in the user manual

it recommends for any tight manoeuvres (ak Carpark work) to turn the diff to green bottom

In basic terms your dccd adds more resistance, with no resistance there is free movement, the more resistance the more the diff will try to compensate with its opposite number so thats what your hearing.
