As title im after a bigger turbo for my classic wagon, seen a mcrae 555 turbo (Garret MD555?) for sale.
Doesnt have the 90deg bend on the compressor housing but...
Would it fit and what would be needed..
What turbo is it and whats it good for..
Thanks.

First of all, what year wagon do you have? second, the JDM Mcrae and the UK one both run TD05 16G's.
Your not going to get away with just putting a bigger turbo on your car, there is much more to it than that.

The mcrae should be a 96 car, which is a phase 1 engine, your car is a phase 1 engine, you will need to have your car mapped, either with an ESL chip or a completely new ecu to run a TD05 without it causing engine issues (normally terminal), so either that turbo isnt off what they said it is or just keep looking.

The z4 ecu I fitted is designed to be used with a td05, so why the remap/chip?

The quality of the help you receive depends on the quality of the information you supply. You didnt mention a Z4, so how would Tony know about it?
I have no idea what a McRea 555 is (but is certainly didnt have a Garret turbocharger - if its an STI2 then itll have an IHI turbo, but this wont be able to flow significantly more air than a TD05), but Id suggest that a TD05 16G is a plenty big enough turbo for most people. What sort of horsepower are you looking for and what sort of supporting work will you be doing?

280 -300 bhp will be fine (by the way in my second post I stated z4 ECU) and the only work I will be doing is stated above
DeCat, z4, K&N, Sti V5/6 Intercooler. Maybe a chip for 16psi
Ok - Will keep hunting for a decent TD05.
Thanks

One further point for anyone keen to tell me what a 'McRea 555' is: having CMc's name embroidered on the seats doent make it a 'McRea'.....

So you did, sorry. I missed it too and I looked twice! The TD05 is more than able to produce the power youre looking for and more. Id look for a de-cat downpipe (no cat required for pre August 1995 cats), injectors, fuel pump and a front mounted intercooler.
Im still sceptical about the benefit of a later Classic intercooler. I dont have personal experience, but people whom I trust have experimented and measured (intake temps particularly) and this has convinced me.
Andy Forrest can supply you with an hybrid TD04 thatll bolt straight on and be able to flow enough air for 320bhp with supporting modifications, or a TD05-20G thatll be able to pump 400bhp (but will need different oil pipes etc). A standard TD05 should be able to manage 340bhp, but all TD05s will require minor parts to fit.
The original intercooler will max out at about 310bhp and the later type will add 20bhp to that: hardly worth it, in my opinion. A New Age STI top mount increases this to 450bhp and whilst its harder to fit it makes far more sense for a 50% increase, as opposed to well under 10%.....

Yeah got a decat downpipe on the way hopefully (with the port for a wastegate), I would like to keep the middle silencer (but is this restrictive?).
Will the standard fuel pump not keep up with the z4/td05?

Alright Pete.
I have gone down the same route as you with a wagon and was wondering what intercooler your fitting. Is it a ver3+?
I recently changed my bonnet for a facelift one and was going to do the cooler to, but apparently I have to cut the throttle body inlet down, how are you getting on with yours?
Mine ran fine on the standard pump and was chipped, upgraded when the standard one failed.
Wether it failed because it was having to work hard I dont know.

The standard pump isnt brilliant even for standard cars and with the Warlbro being so cheap, its a no-brainer. For any performance increase Id also be looking at an equally cheap parallel fuel rail mod. Theres a reason that its always number three cylinder that fails, after all.....

burbling1 - Not done the intercooler yet got a v5/6 sti one, theres a post I raised about it a bit further down some good info there....tight squeeze though!
GC8 - whats the parallel fuel rail mod?

As manufactured the injectors receive fuel in series, with number three getting it last (and at the lowest pressure, leading to a lean mixture and all the heartache that causes). The parallel mod takes an independent line to each injector, preventing the pressure drop.
With regards to the later intercooler and the 'good info': have you seen my post on this thread where Ive justified my 'not worth it' remark? For less than a 10% improvement it really isnt. If you must have a top mount then put the effort (plus a good bit more, admittedly) into a New Age STI part, or fit a front mount, which you can buy off Harvey Smith for not much.
