Check engine light on!!!!!
The car is a p reg wagon, the light has been on and off for a couple of days but only in the hot weather its flashed on then gone back off just as quick, put it down to the hot weather, but it came on earlier and stayed on,took the car home and parked it up,its still running fine but noticed the steering pump has gotten a little noisey. Is there any way i can diagnose the problem myself without a code machine???

YEP!
Connect the two black connectors under the steering wheel - turn ignition on - read the Check Engine light flashes.
I bet it's code 22 - Knock Sensor!

I'm the king of ScoobyNet - i know everything
There is only the one Knock Sensor and it is located under the InterCooler ... one bolt holds it on the block.
I would suggest you break and make the connector first .. white connector (I think?) under the IC ..... disconnect it and reconnect. That can sort it.
I had mine flash on last August - went on holiday to North Devon for a week .... didn't see it again. Until 3 weeks ago when it flashed on again .... drove it on a family trip of 130 miles and it didn't appear again!
I have a theory ... the area under the intercooler gets condensation, that gets into the connectors and gives an out of spec reading to the ECU, flagging up the Check Engine light - get some heat in the area and all is well (dry it out completely, by taking a reasonable drive and it stays off for months!).
I didn't worry about it .... cost if you want to replace is about £89, but check those wires/connectors.

Glad you have it sorted
It's usually just the connector ....... the ECU will input standard values if it thinks it's not working, if you are using Super Unleaded you should have no issues whatsoever.
