Default wastegate chatter.....

Just wondering - at the moment i get a really cool sound from my engine as i take my foot off the accelerator, which im led to believe is wastegate chatter??....

now if i were to change my dump valve or perhaps renew my induction kit - would i risk losing said noise???? Or will it stay there whatever???

any help or knowledge v much appreciated...

thanks guys!

it's not wastegate chatter

it's probably compressor stall (the throttle closes and there's nowhere for the air to go and it stalls over the turbine making that noise, and probably knocking **** out of your turbo), or maybe you can just hear the recirculator.

As stated, there is no such thing as wastegate chatter. If it sounds like a VTA dump valve, but kind of chopped up, then it is compressor surge. What dump valve do you have?

oh i see!!!... i saw a thread a while back saying thats what it was, kinda like the rally cars that have em sometimes??

The sound is like.... LoL. can you remember the bionic man when they do something bionic ha ha - kinda like that!!

the dumpvalve on there atm is just the baileys 1 i believe... thats why i wanted to upgrade to something louder (HKS, blitz, etc etc?).

So am i right in thinking this is not good???....

If you were to remove the dumpvalve it would increase the sound fitting a induction kit would do the same. Removing the dumpvalve is likely to decrease your turbos lifespan.

i had a sound similar to that on an old Forge dump valve, turns out the diaphram inside and a tear, hence the repeated hiss/fart sound. I changed to a HKS and solved the issue

Personally never had issues with comp stall ran one of my turbo cars with no dump valve for over a year with absolutely no sign of excess bearing wear or shaft play. think its all a bit of a myth personally, i know what happens and how the air is effected but just dont think its all 'that' bad.

didn't do it on my last car as that had ceramic comp blades and that would have killed the turbo lol

will probably run a closed bov or no bov on my Subaru as well as it just sounds the ****! or at least a super hard spring so it chatters on soft throttle and dumps on WOT

Some turbos can handle it ok, others not so...

Most turbo's now a days are pretty dam strong, compressor and exhaust blades are allot more durable then they used to be... but yep totally agree, all depends on the turbo hence staying as far away from comp stall as possible on my mr2 with the crappy ceramic blades.

Personally i don't think its a biggy, some might disagree though.

what turbo are you running? Td05? there fairly tuff beasts so a bit of comp stall wont do it no harm.

LoL, yeh it does sound cool i gotta admit!!!

just to clarify tho - so is it the actual turbo that causes it??? So that means i could change my dumpvalve or buy a new induction kit and i wouldnt risk losing the "chatter" right???...

ive got a TD05, Front mount with no dump valve, the chatter is off the chain!!

I have run my last four turbo cars this way and have never had any problems. fiesta turbo with a little Garret T2,(also a side note, came out of the factory with no d/v) uk impreza TD04, R34 Skyline and now my WRX, as mentioned above, I believe it all to be all a bit of a myth about damaging your turbo.

As above it's air stalling over the compressor baldes, not wastegate chatter. Easiest route to getting the sound is blanking off the DV. Some older VF turbos (think pre VF30) are a bit too fragile to be used sans DV. TD series are as tough as old boots and will be fine with it.

Running without a DV can generate issues with MAF reversion on MAF equipped cars which does affect drivability (you can get a judder/jerk comming off the throttle when the car is on boost) I did on my MY99 when I had an Ecute'd Std ECU. No such issues when I went Mafless with simtek though.

just to clear things up a bit for you buddy, it will be your dump valve which induces the 'chatter' from the turbo... this is only because for some reason the bov isnt releasing all the pressure from the turbo when you come off the throttle.

if you replace the dump valve you need to either get an adjustable one which you can turn to a harder setting, this means it takes a greater built up pressure to force open the bov and 'dump' the air out. or just find a way to block the hole from your tmic/fmic... so you run with no bov.
