Pinking? aka the dreaded "Det" or "Knock"????????

First thing is to keep your right foot feather light until it's sorted. Failure to do so will result in engine failure, trust me And it's expensive, again, trust me

Is the engine standard, completely standard?

If not, say what you've done, or has been done, including small mods like dumpvalve, induction kit etc.

is your car modified in any way/means/form, as that is a good starting point to seeing what is up with it.
As Alcazar said, foot off the throttle when you get det, its a nice 2.5k+ for an engine rebuild due to holed pistons

First, as has been said - keep the loading low ...

Secondly, run a bottle of Injector Cleaner through it (I put it in when the fuel is low, so the concentration is high).

Then get some more decent Super in it and have another go. I had pinking in mine now and again .... but that was often because I was in too high a gear for the situation.

Other possibilities are the knock sensor and the MAF sensor. Have you had a check engine light shine at you?

engine is standard bar a dump valve, exhaust and decat up pipe and a panel filter.

i have had the check engine light come on 2 days ago yes,it also drinks loads and loads of fuel, and it doesnt make a difference if i drive it slowly off boost, highest i have managed to get it is about 17mpg,most of time its around 12mpg.

roughly how much are knock and maf sensors? and how do i diagnose if this is the fault?
cheers

Take it to a dealer or speciallist, get them to put it on the machine and read all the codes, chances are you could have one or more sensors failing, from maf to O2 sensor, either way its not a happy bunny and needs sorting out.

You could start by connecting the black connectors together under the steering wheel and reading the error code/s.

That should point you in the direction to go.

Knock Sensors are about £89 and MAF for yours is also around that figure (but T Reg was about the time they changed MAF design - so, you may have the expensive early version?) both are simple jobs to replace.

check for damaged pipework downstream of the MAF, any leaks will lean the mixture out and cause det.

ah rite, well where the plastic hose connects to turbo, has a split in it,it was bodged up by someone else,i uncovered the problem but as i heard an air leak,so untill i get a new replacement i taped it up with duct tape, the air leak noise did stop but obviously it still has the leak, reckon i will buy new maf and knock sensors anyway and the replace ment pipe and also service it at same time just to rule it all out.

get it to a specialist, it may be one of the sensors or it maybe not, you could spend a fortune chasing it round the engine bay and still not find it.

As Tidgy says ... don't go spending money chasing the problem - get it checked out.
